Independent Shakespeare Co. is performing Twelfth Night in Griffith Park on Saturday. On Sunday get there early for crafts and Players in the Park featuring Shakes-Queer with drag performer Pickle and ISC’s Xavi Moreno teaching everyone to recite Shakespeare before a performance of Pericles.

Long Beach’s Zaferia District is having the one day music and comedy festival Happy Sundays at several local venues. Bands include Janelane, Billy Changer, The Molochs, The Gems, Triptides, Cat Scan, Tropa Magica, Prettiest Eyes, Girl Tears, and more plus comedy with Neil Hamburger

Blum & Poe’s >BTWN x PERFORMANCE< events continues with Kandis Williams Presents “Eurydice” her ongoing project that “investigates the relationship between ‘black identity’ and ‘mainstream culture’ “. She uses the Greek myth of Eurydice as a vehicle for her “inquiry into the subjects of a racialized imagination and its subsequent logics, by staging a structured engagement of blackness and spectacle within a mythic pre-Socratic configuration of the underworld.”

CicLAvia’s closing down streets to vehicles from West Hollywood to East Hollywood for their Meet the Hollywoods event. Santa Monica Blvd will be closed from San Vicente to Highland. Highland is closed from there to Hollywood Blvd and Hollywood is closed from Highland to Vermont. There will be a few intersections to cross with a vehicle but its probably best to join the car free fun or use public transportation to get around.

Independent Shakespeare Co. is performing Twelfth Night in Griffith Park tonight. Get there early to join a workshop with teaching artists where participants will learn more about the characters, plot and choices of the evening’s play, plus take a backstage tour and check out some of the costumes and props.  Reserve a spot for this free pre show workshop here. UCLA Film & Television Archive continues its screenings in the Billy Wilder Theater at the Hammer Museum with a night of programming that includes the 1961 film Nude on the Moon followed by Smut Without Smut: Bizarro Horror Night, a collection of “hardcore horror movies with the hardcore removed”. ($9)

The Underground Museum’s Purple Garden Cinema film this week is Wanda. Novelist Rachel Kushner will be there to give a special introduction to the film. (free)

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros are playing at The Greek Theatre with Phosphorescent and Altin Gun opening

It’s the 50th Anniversary of the Hollywood Bowl’s night of Tchaikovsky music with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, conductor Bramwll Tovey, and the USC Trojan Marching Band performing plus fireworks ending the evening

As part of Blum & Poe’s >BTWN x FILM + MUSIC< series, artist Jim Shaw and filmmaker/curator Jodi Wille will present shorts from the Counterculture Film Vaults followed by music by Shaw and friends within an installation of the artist’s creation (free)

For the closing of Barbara Stauffacher Solomon’s exhibition Relax into the Invisible at LAXART, L.A.-based artists Emily Mast and Barnett Cohen will present an afternoon of dance and theater inspired by Solomon’s work. Performances will take place from 3-5pm.

Artists Genevieve Gaignard and Samuel Levi Jones will be giving a walk through of their respective solo exhibitions at Vielmetter Los Angeles followed by a conversation with Leigh Raiford, associate professor of African American Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. (free)

Bill Baird is playing a free show at Highland Park Bowl with Manhattan Murder Mystery and Mirrorball

ICA LA is hosting Reading the News-a 34,000 Pillows workshop with artist collaborative Díaz Lewis. 34,000 is the quota of detained immigrants per day in 250 facilities around the country mandated by the US Congress and enforced by ICE. Pillows from recycled clothing will be created and added to the 34,000 Pillows project to be sold for $159 (an amount that reflects the average amount of taxpayer money spent each day by Congress to detain one person daily) with 100% of proceeds donated to national and local immigration organizations. While the pillows are made there will also be a reading of news, literature, and poetry. (free)

Union Station is hosting Magic & Mystery, a free night of performances by magicians on the South Patio

Every year The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) awards grants to the city’s best mid-career artists. The work created with these grants is then shown in the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery (LAMAG) in Barnsdall Park for the C.O.L.A.(City of Los Angeles) exhibitions.

COLA 2019 is made up of 11 artists working in various mediums. Two of the artists, Juan Capistrán and Kim Fisher were also shown together as part of Hammer Museum’s biennial exhibition, Made in L.A. 2014. For this show, Capistrán created large brick sculptures that he placed in sites in South Los Angeles that haven’t been rebuilt since the 1992 LA Riots. In his section of work in the gallery, he includes photos of these temporary site specific installations as well as some of the brick sculptures- two of which have balloons tied to them spelling GRATIS. The bricks can be seen as objects of destruction or building blocks, and the dual meanings work well in the context of the work.

Kim Fisher’s large collages capture another side of Los Angeles. From the hedge she used for the largest piece, to the ocean, swimming pools, and car culture, included in her others, the graphics and color come together in a way that feels very much like the traditional ideas associated with the city.  The different sections, created to look as if they were torn or cut from magazines, form collages that feel like scattered memories that have somehow arranged themselves cohesively.

Sabrina Gschwandtner took forgotten films made by female directors and stitched them together to form patterns drawn from the history of quilt-making. The use of a craft that is traditionally associated with women and tying it an artistic pursuit that women are only more recently being acknowledged for is an interesting juxtaposition. The resulting work is stunning graphically and reminiscent of Agnés Varda’s colorful house of film reels created for LACMA’s Agnés Varda in Californialand from 2014.

Enrique Castrejon created sculptures that stem from his work in an LGBTQ center in Los Angeles. His sculptures of fragmented bodies are surrounded by strips of paper with HIV infection rates. The humanity of the figures contrasts with the overwhelming strips of typed documentation that swarms all around them.

All of the work created for this exhibition is incredibly strong and these annual exhibitions are a great way to see some of the best work being created by Los Angeles artists today. If you can’t make it to the exhibition there is a video on the site that takes you on a walk through with one of the curators. Also make sure to catch Stephanie Taylor’s Municipal Art Song, which plays at the entrance to the exhibition. She created song lyrics based on text from LAMAG and DCA’s websites and catalogs, and used them to create sheet music using Schoolhouse Rock! as an inspiration. The result is really funny, especially if you read a lot of press releases.
