The Pharcyde- Drop
Another innovative video from Spike Jonze. The Pharcyde memorized the song in reverse so it would sync with the backwards video. From 1995, it also has some great shots of downtown Los Angeles and a cameo from Ad Rock and Mike D of the Beastie Boys.
A brief behind the scenes look-
Wavves- King of the Beach
Wavves are playing at the Echoplex tonight (10/15).
Duologue– Underworld
I saw these guys last night and they put on a great live show. They are playing tonight at Taix (The Champagne Room) as part of Culture Collide. Check them out!
The B-52’s- Legal Tender
DayGlo colors, big wigs, 1980’s video production values and a song about making counterfeit dollars all come together to equal awesome.
The National- Pink Rabbits (Live on KCRW)
Listening to their latest album, Trouble Will Find Me, was perfect on this rainy day in Los Angeles.
MGMT- Cool Song No.2
The latest video from their new self-titled album. It stars Michael K. Williams, previously the antihero Omar Little on The Wire and now Chalky White on Boardwalk Empire.
The video is a little bit Drive, a little bit Breaking Bad, and a lot of a man who seems to be turning into a tree (a disease which is a rare but real thing, unfortunately).
Beastie Boys- “Sabotage”
This video directed by Spike Jonze is one of the most iconic from the days when people watched a lot of music videos. From the costumes to the editing and direction this one never gets old.
I loved seeing M83 play on Sunday at the Hollywood Bowl. Singer Anthony Gonzalez brought such a lovely energy to the show. I can’t remember the last time an artist seemed so genuinely thrilled to be performing.
This song, Kim and Jessie, from the album Saturdays=Youth, wasn’t included in the show but I love it, so I thought I’d put it up this week.
The Kinks- Autumn Almanac
I love this song and it always ends up on my playlists when Autumn returns, even when I’m living in places where you only know what season it is by the displays put up in stores. It’s so English as well, reminding me of good times spent with “football on a Saturday, roast beef on Sunday”.
Surfer Blood are playing tonight (7/11) at Santa Monica Pier! FREE!
