Chicano Batman are opening for Cubanismo for Santa Monica Pier’s free Twilight Concert this week

OOFJ are performing at Amoeba Records (free)

Artist Frances Stark will be discussing the work of Sturtevant, whose exhibition at MOCA closes this weekend- free and free entrance to the museum from 5-8 pm

Freedom Fry are one of the four bands playing for free at Mrs. Fish downtown

Culture Club are at the Greek Theatre (also Friday)

Ducktails, Matt Mondanile’s (the guitarist from Real Estate) solo music project, is hosting the Getty Center’s Friday Night Flights (free but parking is $15/$10 after 5)

Penelope Spheeris will be discussing her punk rock films Suburbia and Decline of Western Civilization Part III between their screenings at the Egyptian Theatre

Roaring Nights continues at the LA Zoo with musical performances, DJs, pop-up zookeeper talks, food trucks and full bars ($20)-

Imagine Dragons are playing at the Forum with Metric

LACMA is showing Christian Marclay: The Clock for 24 hours starting at 10am. This is a great chance to see what is included in the film during the hours the museum is not open (free during non museum hours)

Jazz musician Kamasi Washington is performing at California Plaza as part of Grand Performances

Saturdays off the 405 at the Getty this week is Tropicalifornia featuring the Do-Over All Stars-”the ultimate live-band tropical dance party”- free with the exception of the parking

Exhibition organizer Rebecca Matalon conducts a walk through of Tongues Untied the current show at MOCA Pacific Design Center

Blondie is co-headlining with Melissa Ethridge at the Greek Theatre

At Skirball Cultural Center this week for the outdoor concert Into the Night, musical acts Tamaryn and Mystic Braves will perform while Joshua Light Show presents a “liquid light show” to accompany the music ($20)

Superhumanoids are playing with Tropics at Figat7th’s free downtown event

L7 are at the Fonda Theatre (tickets available for balcony only, or see them Thursday when tickets are available for the floor only)-

This week at Grand Performances is The Last Jimmy: A Hip Hop Musical with Dice Raw which “explores mass incarceration, the criminal justice system, and the prison-industrial complex through the eyes of young black males” (free)

MOCA’s Step and Repeat returns to their Geffen location for three days of numerous performances that include music, performance art, comedy, poetry and dance- $12 for one night or $30 for all three- check the link for the list of all the artists-

Artists/Street Artists Haunted Euth and T.S. Clair’s joint exhibition “Heroine” is at Stone Malone Gallery and opens tonight

Photographer Marcus Haney is screening his film “No Cameras Allowed” at Annenberg Space for Photography and afterwards will be discussing his current career and how he broke into the business through concert photography ($10)

Downtown Long Beach’s Summer and Music Festival continues with a free screening of The Wizard of Oz, a performance by the band MOVE, and for $5 you can get wireless headphones to participate in Silent Disco- all in the promenade parking lot

Willie Nelson is playing at the Greek Theatre

The Autry’s outdoor movie this week is Three Amigos

The 18th Street Arts Center is having their “Champagne Social” with guided studio tours and of course, champagne (free)-

The second day of the Viva Pomona! festival at the Glass House has headliners Iceage, and Christopher Owens (formerly of the band Girls)

Jesse Thorn of Maximumfun is giving his talk Make Your Thing that “focuses on how he turned his college radio show into an independent media powerhouse” at Annnenberg Space for Photography ($10)

The Art of Melrose is a series of themed events taking place on the third Thursday of the month this summer, from Fairfax to Highland on Melrose with a focus on a three block section. This time for Focus on Fashion it will be Gardner, Martel and Fuller, and the businesses will be offering everything from discounts and gifts with purchase to free food and drink

Cornerstone Theater Company is performing California:The Tempest based on Shakespeare’s play, for free in Grand Park (through the 20th)

Venice Art Crawl has art events, music, entertainment and local business discounts

Friday

The Gas Lamp Killer Experience is the DJ/Producer playing with a 10 piece band-FREE as part of Grand Performances Summer Program at California Plaza

Fever the Ghost, Fartbarf, and Harriet Brown are playing at the Echo

Surfer Blood are playing with Gothic Tropic at the Troubadour

The Container Yard is celebrating its one year anniversary party with a party that will include music, art and food trucks ($5 with a portion of the proceeds going to Self Help Graphics)

Cayucas are playing a free show at One Colorado in Pasadena for KCRW’s Summer Nights

Nearby is the Pasadena Chalk Festival at Paseo Colorado which features some incredible sidewalk murals (also on Sunday)

The band for Saturdays off the 405 at the Getty Center is Shannon and the Clams (free/ parking at the center after 5 is $10)

Culver City’s Summer Crawl includes a free figure sketching class at Graphaids, discounts at some of the local businesses and other events in the area while you check out the art galleries- several shows are opening that night as well
