Things to do in Los Angeles this weekend (7/4-7/7/19)-

Thursday (July 4th)

Grand Park and The Music Center are having a 4th of July Block Party with performances by artists that include DJ Linafornia, The Delirians, and Boogaloo Assassins, a ferris wheel, food trucks, and fireworks at the end of the evening

Celebrate the 4th at the Hollywood Bowl with fireworks and the music of Nile Rodgers and Chic

The Night Market at Yamashiro in Hollywood is on and there will also be a free open to the public pool party event at the Pagoda Bar and an outdoor screening of the film Independence Day

See the LA Dodgers play the San Diego Padres at Dodger Stadium with Holiday Fireworks to follow

Johanna Samuels is performing at the Moroccan Lounge with AO Gerber, Kera, and Cape Weather

Snowball II are playing a free show at The Hi Hat with Girl Hazel, Young Lovers, and Chuck

Friday Night Wine Tastings continue in Barnsdall Art Park curated by Silverlake Wine

The Egyptian Theatre is showing a double feature of Jaws (1977) and Hard Ticket to Hawaii

Independent Shakespeare Co.  is having free performances of the play Twelfth Night in Griffith Park all weekend

The Getty’s music series Off The 405 returns this weekend with a free performance by Welsh singer Cate Le Bon and an opening performance by master Ghanaian xylophone player SK Kakraba

Irish Screen America are partnering with CIACLA for a free night of film, cocktails, and a panel discussion with Irish artists and filmmakers including Nicky Larkin whose film Becoming Cherrie will be shown as part of the program

Chrissie Hynde will be performing at the Hollywood Bowl with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra

Dirty Penni Fest 4 is happening at The Echo and Echoplex with a long list of bands that includes The Buttertones, Destroy Boys, Ultra Q, The Swells, Kicked Off The Street, and more

Everything is Terrible is having a free party to celebrate the opening of their East LA storefront- there will be DJs, art installations, photo booths, free food and drinks, and more

The Buttertones are playing at The Fonda Theatre with Twin Temple and Prettiest Eyes opening

ArtNight Pasadena is a great way to check out the museums and creative spaces in Pasadena as well as see live performances- all free with free shuttles provided to take you around

Mothers are playing at Resident with Lala Lala opening

At ICA LA they are having a free event to celebrate the launch of the online literary magazine SUBLEVEL Issue Two: The Speculative with an evening of poetry by Will Alexander, and a screening of work by artist Nicole Miller followed by a conversation between Miller and writer Tisa Bryant.

A limited number of tickets will be available at the door at LACMA for a screening of The Sisters Brothers with a post screening conversation with John C. Reilly

Screaming Females are playing at the Bootleg Theater with Kitten Forever and Scorpio Scorpio opening

Buke And Gase are opening for Shellac at the Teragram Ballroom

Desert Daze has a long list of great bands playing all weekend including- Tame Impala, Ty Segall & White Fence, Deathgrips, A Place to Bury Strangers, Kevin Morby, Preoccupations, Bedouine, Sons of Kemet, L.A. Witch, Wand, Julia Holter and more- but you have to leave LA- it’s at Moreno Beach at Lake Perris

The Dodos are playing at the Moroccan Lounge with Prism Tats opening

LACMA is hosting a free screening of La Grande Sortie, directed by artist Alex Prager. After the screening there will be a free talk and book signing with the artist and LACMA CEO and Wallis Annneberg Director Michael Govan

Photographer Paul Sepuya will be speaking with Hamza Walker about the relationship between artist and subject, representation, nudity and intimacy at The Getty Museum (free with ticket)

Bill Laurance is playing an early (5:30pm) show at the Echoplex

The Brewery Art Walk is back for its free two day event- a chance to see what artists in the massive complex are working on as well as enjoying some food and drinks

David Lynch is curating a two day event called Festival of Disruption at The Theatre at the Ace Hotel. There will be talks and screenings, including one with Lynch, performances by RZA, Mercury Rev, and Vic Mensa, a soundbath called Liminal with Jonsi of Sigur Ros, Alex Somers, and Paul Corley, art exhibits and more

Christopher Rountree and members of the LA Phil will perform Ben Patterson’s Instruction No.2 (Please Wash Your Face) of 1964, Rebekah Heller of the International Contemporary Ensemble will lead a participatory workshop designed around the music of Pauline Oliveros in the Central Garden, and Fluxus scholar Natilee Harren will give an illustrated talk drawing from the Getty’s extensive archives of Fluxus ephemera all as part of LA Phil Fluxus Festival: Fluxus Learning Event at The Getty (free but ticket required)

La Santa Cecilia is performing at the Walt Disney Concert Hall

The Orson Welles double feature programming continues at the Aero Theatre with Chimes at Midnight and The Immortal Story

Gaz Coombes from Supergrass is playing a solo show at The Masonic Lodge at Hollywood Forever

Jeff Mcllwain is performing his ambient electronic music as Lusine with Geotic opening at The Echo

Friday

At Bob Baker Marionette Theater this week is Subject: Los Angeles in the Streets, the second of 4 events with archival films, guest presenters, music and puppets- this iteration examines forms of public assembly and artistic intervention in the city

Tonight is the second night of the Magnetic Fields two night concert for their new album 50 Song Memoir (yesterday was 1-25, tonight it is songs 26-50) at UCLA’s Royce Hall

Miracle Legion, formed in 1983, are performing their first show in 20 years at the Echoplex with Noveller opening

The Buttertones are headlining a night of bands at the Hi Hat

Brewery Artwalk returns to the complex with artist residents opening their doors to visitors (also Sunday)

Artist Michael Smith is speaking at the Hammer Museum (free)

Cinefamily is showing the film Somewhere Beautiful with a live set by Avi Buffalo and Andrea Silva (who have songs in the film). The director of the film, Albert Kodagolian, will also be present with the director of the film that inspired him, Atom Egoyan.

Subject: Los Angeles is a four night program at The Bob Baker Marionette Theater consisting of “L.A. ephemera featuring archival films, guest presenters, music, and puppets that explore hidden threads of L.A. history”. Tonight is Subject: Los Angeles as Eden which explores the ways L.A.’s image has been presented as a paradise.

LACMA is screening an episode of the CNN original series, United Shades of America with W. Kamau Bell, titled Immigrants and Refugees, with a discussion with Bell to follow (free)

Julia Jacklin is playing at the Bootleg Theater with Gold Star and Christian Lee Hutson opening
