Things to do in Los Angeles this weekend (9-29-10/2/16)-

Thursday

Gringo Star are playing at The Satellite with The Relationship (Weezer guitarist Brian Bell’s band) and Night Talks

Hammer Museum is showing Eva Hesse, a documentary about the artist with a Q & A with the director Marcie Begleiter and producer Karen Shapiro afterwards

Trentemøller is performing and signing copies of his new album Fixion at Amoeba Hollywood before his sold out show at Hollywood Forever’s Mason Lodge  (free but get there early)

It’s the first of two nights of UnSilent Cinema at FIGat7th (presented by Arts Brookfield) where musicians provide a contemporary score for classic silent films. Tonight Marc Ribot will score Charlie Chaplin’s The Kid and Alvin Youngblood Hart will score Fatty Arbuckle’s Out West. There will also be a Chaplin Speakeasy Happy Hour and DJs before the program begins. (free)

As part of  The Broad’s film series Doll Parts, tonight they will be screening Ming Wong’s Life of Imitation followed by Douglas Sirk’s Imitation of Life ($12 includes same-night access to the museum

The Soul Rebels Sound System ft. Talib Kweli are playing at the Fonda Theatre

For the second night of UnSilent Cinema at FIGat7th, electronic musicians will be the focus for the program- Daedelus will be scoring Charlie Chaplin’s Easy Street, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith will be scoring Harry Smith’s Early Abstractions, Jimmy Tamborello will be scoring Buster Keaton’s Cops, and Callie will be scoring Chaplin’s One A.M.

Thievery Corporation are playing the Greek Theatre with Chronixx

Front Porch Cinema is hosting a free movie night at the Santa Monica Pier with a screening of Zootopia

The Regrettes are playing at Non Plus Ultra with Casinos and Liily

TV Girl, Avid Dancer, and Bad Wave are playing at The Hi Hat

Jimmy Kimmel Live is having a yard sale in the studio’s back parking lot in Hollywood to benefit My Friend’s Place, an organization that helps homeless youth

For the performance- At the Edge of Space and Time: Expanding beyond Our 4% Universe, at the Hammer Museum, collaborators Jennifer Moon and laub will “bring viewers on an adventure through the cosmos, the multiverse, and beyond, presenting ideas about love, faith, and revolution by queering various scientific disciplines”. (free, also on Sunday)

It’s Dublab’s 17th Anniversary and they are having a party at Union Nightclub (formerly known as Jewel’s Catch One) with performances by Peanut Butter Wolf, Egyptian Lover and many more

ENTRANCE is playing at Resident with Weyes Blood and Lael Neale

John Doe & Exene Cervenka are playing at the Regent Theater with special guest Howe Gelb

Eli Detweiler, Jr., a livestock and auto auctioneer, will perform a high-speed auctioneer chant and lead an informal workshop in auctioneer number-calling at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA . Detweiler is featured in Doug Aitken’s 1998 installation these restless minds which is part of the MOCA exhibition Doug Aitken: Electric Earth. (MOCA entrance and this program are free)

Cosmonauts are having an album release party at the Echoplex with Cellars and Tomorrows Tulips also playing

As part of Doll Parts, the continuing film series at The Broad that complements the Cindy Sherman exhibit, artist Lynn Hershman Leeson’s electronic video diary Binge will be shown along with the work of performance artist Narcissister, who will also perform live ($12 includes night access to the museum)

Friday

Clockshop is hosting Readings by Moonrise at the Bowtie Project in Frogtown with authors A-lan Holt and Dana Johnson and a performance by Nevenka, an Eastern European folk ensemble ($5 suggested donation- s’mores will be provided but you can bring your own picnic items)

Local Natives are playing the Greek Theatre with special guest Charlotte Day Wilson

For the last of LA Zoo’s Roaring Nights the theme is the ’80s with tributes to David Bowie and Prince, as well as food, drinks, vintage video games, and “special animal encounters”

Porches are playing with Japanese Breakfast and Rivergazer at the Echoplex

Brainfeeder at the Hollywood Bowl has Flying Lotus, Funkadelic featuring George Clinton and Parliament, Thundercat, Shabazz Palaces, and The Gaslamp Killer performing

Chinatown is having its 78th Annual Mid-Autumn Moon Festival with bands and DJs, cooking demonstrations, a market and more

Glendale is having its first Open Arts & Music Fest with bands, an arts market and kids arts and crafts workshops

The Squids are having a record release party at The Hi Hat

Sunday

Kraftwerk’s 3-D concert series is at the Hollywood Bowl

The Regent Theater is celebrating the work of Kenneth Anger with a screening of The Invocation of My Demon Brother, Scorpio Rising, Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome, and Lucifer Rising. Following the screening, Kenneth Anger and Brian Butler will perform as the Technicolor Skull. The evening will conclude with a Q&A.

Long Beach’s Comic Con is back for its second and final day

Manfredi Gioacchini has a new book of informal portraits of LA artists and will be discussing it with Jonas Wood at LACMA

Weirdo Night! is back at El Cid with “an evening of experimental comedic performance and video” hosted by Dynasty Handbag
