Light Atlas, a painting series by Cynthia Daignault, was on view at Akron Art Museum in 2024.

From the museum:

In 2014, Cynthia Daignault began driving north from her home in Brooklyn, New York. She turned west in New England and south at the Pacific Northwest, and she kept going until she had traced the entire outer perimeter of the continental United States. Having calculated the necessary distance, the artist stopped about every twenty-seven miles to make a sketch so that she could record a total of 360 images, representing the full circle of her journey. After five months on the road, she returned to her studio and created the paintings of Light Atlas. In each picture, Daignault placed the horizon line at the center, helping to suggest a continuous narrative and a collective portrait of the country. Having intentionally set out in the spring, she aimed to capture a mood of optimism and rebirth.

This series is currently on view as an installation at Thomas Cole National Historic Site in Catskill, NY. The 360 landscape paintings, will be on view until November 1st. On Saturday, September 12th, you can create a landscape painting with her for the site’s Second Saturday Workshop, and on Sunday she will be discussing Light Atlas for their Sunday Salon lecture series.

Daignault’s recent series, based on Yosemite National Park‘s iconic Tunnel View, is on view at the Institute of Contemporary Art / Boston until January 2027. For these paintings she used “the “mediated consciousness” of digital images, to meditate on our urgent and evolving relationship with the American landscape”.

Things to do in Los Angeles this weekend (4/18-4/21/19)-

Thursday

Miami based artist Jamilah Sabur joins Los Angeles based artist Michael Queenland in conversation at the Hammer Museum in conjunction with her Hammer Projects exhibition.

UCLA Film & Television Archive and Vidiots are having a special screening of Heathers at The Theatre at Ace Hotel with a post screening conversation with director Michael Lehmann, screenwriter Daniel Waters, and co-star, Lisanne Falk aka Heather McNamara

Randy Randall of No Age will be at Zebulon to perform Sound Volume One, a series of soundscapes inspired by the westward path of the I-10 through Southern California, from downtown LA to Santa Monica. It will be accompanied by an immersive multi-room audio visual installation done in collaboration with visual artist Aaron Farley.

The Egyptian Theatre is showing The Juniper Tree, which stars Björk in her first screen performance

Fanclub and Prism Tats are playing a free (but RSVP) show at Gold Diggers

There are a few free entrance days a year for the National Parks and today is one of them. It’s also National Park Week with events in several parks.

Zebulon is hosting Sensorium-Sonic Integration and Elevated Sensory Experience, which includes a modular sound bath, tarot readings, and a company giving out CBD samples

For the launch of the book The Los Angeles Tapes: Alan Solomon’s Interviews with Kauffman, Bell, Turrell, and Irwin, Hauser and Wirth will be hosting a conversation between artist Larry Bell and the book’s editor, Matthew Simms (free but RSVP)

Olvera Street’s annual Blessing of The Animals, an event that has taken place since its founding in 1930, starts at 2pm

Places to Visit- California Road Trip- Super Bloom 2017

This is a great weekend to take a road trip to see the super bloom going on in Southern California. It’s so big you can even see it from space! One of the best places to go at the moment is Carrizo Plain National Monument, east of San Luis Obispo. A shorter distance away, if you are traveling from Los Angeles, is Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve, which still has some flowers in bloom. You could also check out desert flowers blooming at Joshua Tree National Park which, like all National Parks, is free this weekend (4/15-4/16) and next weekend (4/22-4/23).
