1720 is hosting 45 Live with performances by Lord Finesse, Peanut Butter Wolf, J Rocc, Prince Paul, and special guests

MOCA Grand Avenue is showing Babette Magolte’s film The Sky on Location with the artist in attendance for the event

Tobe Nwigwe is performing at The Regent Theater

Downtown LA Artwalk returns with open studios and gallery shows

 

Friday

Refest Los Angeles 2019, is a salon that “explores innovative strategies in participatory performance that catalyze social change”. It is being hosted by Navel and CultureHubLA and will have interactive installations, performances and “experiences” by LA artists and artists from CultureHub’s global community (free with RSVP)

Odd Nights at The Autry includes a market, live music, food trucks, and the galleries at the museum stay open until 9pm ($5)

Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach is free on Fridays from 6-9pm for Shark Lagoon Nights

Jeffertitti’s Nile are playing a free show at Zebulon with special guests

Tashaki Miyaki are playing a free show at the Highland Park Bowl with Magic Wands, The Mercury Wheel, and Miguel Mendez & The Yoga Elite

LAMAG is hosting a free screening of Mariah Garnett’s film Trouble, a documentary about her relationship with her Northern Irish father who she met as an adult. The screening also includes a Q&A with the artist to follow plus snacks and drinks.

There’s a free ten hour Bach Marathon happening at Union Station, with various concerts taking place throughout the station

Artist Silke Otto-Knapp will be in conversation with Darby English, University of Chicago’s Carl Darling Buck Professor of Art History and the College, at Regen Projects at 2pm, in conjunction with Otto-Knapp’s exhibition Land and Sea at the gallery

Actor/ Director Alex Cox will be at the Egyptian Theatre to speak between screenings of Repo Man and his recent film Tombstone Rashomon

Sam Valdez and Rodes Rollins are playing at the Moroccan Lounge

New York Night Train with Jonathan Toubin, the all night dance party of uncommon soul music on vinyl, is happening at Zebulon

LACMA is hosting a free lecture at 1pm by Sarah Kelly Oehler, Field-McCormick Chair and Curator of American Art at The Art Institute of Chicago, and organizing curator of Charles White: A Retrospective (currently at the museum), on the artist’s formative years in Chicago

Zebulon is having a free screening of Stanley Kubrick’s 1975 film Barry Lyndon

The Egyptian Theatre is showing a Patrick Swayze double feature- Road House and Point Break

CLAVVS are playing at The Echo with Tigercide and a special guest

Tonight for the second part of Paul McCarthy’s free film series at Hauser & Wirth to accompany his current exhibition, the gallery is screening Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and Whity in the courtyard

Writers Ernest Hardy and Tisa Bryant will be discussing film, television, music, social media, and news in relation to “black representations of depression and distress, remedies and healing, and the resilience of joy in black life and culture” at the Hammer Museum.  (free)

LPX (of MS MR) is playing with Monogem and Tulpa & Blankts at The Echo

The Mynabirds are playing with Winter and Umm at the Bootleg Theater

Friday Flights returns to the Getty with a performances by -Kenyatta A.C. Hinkle and Tyler Matthew Oyer with live music accompaniment by The Kevin Robinson Ensemble (KREation); visual and sound artist Scott Benzel; and a performance by psych-rock band Psychic Ills (free)

Artbook at Hauser & Wirth is hosting Out of the Hat, a reading series “where various artists, writers, dancers, poets, and theoreticians will share—and be called—to the stage through an old adage of chance: the pulling of names out of a hat”. This weeks lineup is- Evan Burrows, Michael Kennedy Costa, Simone Forti, Michael Ned Holte and Matias Viegener.

homeLA returns with its house specific dance performances- this time there are three, taking place at a home in Larchmont

For August’s Summer Happenings at The Broad, bands A Place to Bury Strangers and Xiu Xiu will be playing; performance artist Linda Mary Montano will offer “healings and blessings”; Keijaun Thomas will perform his work, Distance is not Separation; and the third floor galleries will feature “a Xenolalia room – the Christian missionary spirit gift or ability to speak in an unlearned language – with poets Raquel Gutiérrez, Elliot Reed and Lisa Teasley, and musicians Gabie Strong, Pauline Gloss and David Harrow”. ($25 advance / $30 at the door)

For the last of the DJ Nights in Grand Park– The Gaslamp Killer will be joined by DJs Computer Jay and C Minus for a night of rock songs

For the closing of the exhibition Shapeshifters at Shulamit Nazarian Gallery in Venice,  XINA XURNER (Shapeshifters artist Young Joon Kwak’s musical performance collaboration with Marvin Astorga) will present a new performance that combines voice, music, movement, and interaction with Kwak’s sculptures and features artist and composer Elisa Harkins and Travis R-D of performance collective Project Rage Queen. The performance will be followed by a conversation between Kwak and artist Jennifer Moon.

Sinkane is performing a free concert at Skirball Cultural Center

LACMA has a free screening of Ira Sachs’ new film Little Men and a conversation with Sachs and stars of the film Greg Kinnear and Theo Taplitz
