Missing Persons- Destination Unknown
Dale Bozzio, former lead singer of new wave band Missing Persons, is performing at the Whiskey A Go Go tomorrow (3/7) with Gene Loves Jezebel.
This song is from the 1982 album Spring Session M, which went gold. It may be over 30 years later, but Dale Bozzio’s influence can still be seen in some female pop stars today, especially Lady Gaga.
Devo– Through Being Cool
This song is from their album, New Traditionalists, released in 1981. It was written in reaction to the widespread popularity of their most famous song, Whip It, from 1980, and the new fans who didn’t understand the often subversive message behind their work.
Founding member and guitarist for the band, Bob Casale, died of heart failure last week, on February 17th, at 61.
Big Daddy Kane- Ain’t No Half Steppin’
This song is from the album Long Live the Kane released in 1988. Big Daddy Kane is playing the House of Blues this Friday (2/21).
The Notwist- Where In This World
The Notwist are a German indie band that started in 1989 and have gone through many musical style changes over the years. The song above is from one of my favorite albums of 2008, The Devil, You + Me. They have a new album coming out this month, Close to the Glass.
The Fugees- Ready or Not
Lauryn Hill sang this song (from 1996) and a few others when she performed for the Amnesty International Bringing Human Rights Home concert yesterday; the first “Human Rights” concert in 16 years. The original was in 1986 and included U2, Sting and Peter Gabriel.
Performers at last night’s show included Imagine Dragons, Blondie, The Flaming Lips, and others, as well as an appearance by members of Pussy Riot, who spoke out for human rights and against Putin (after an introduction by Madonna).
Art of Noise- Moments in Love
When I heard Katy Perry’s song Dark Horse, there was something about it that sounded really familiar. Thanks to a few searches, I found this song from the band Art of Noise that goes back to1983. According to Wiki, it was also played at Madonna’s wedding to Sean Penn as she walked down the aisle.
This video is a mess of bad wigs, ice skating, and a bizarre moment with a turtle (around 2:33).
Wu-Tang Clan- Method Man
A throwback from 1997. Method Man is playing this weekend in Santa Ana at the Yost Theater on Sunday, 1/26.
OutKast- So Fresh, So Clean
This song is off the album Stankonia, released in 2000. OutKast is headlining the first day of Coachella 2014.
