Things to do in Los Angeles this weekend (11/1-11/4/18)-

Thursday

Hammer Museum is screening the film Dark Money with a Q&A with director Kimberly Reed and political director for Crooked Media Shaniqua McClendon to follow. (free)

The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA is hosting Vote For Your Lives Rally, an event in collaboration with For Freedoms, Summit, and March For Our Lives, to share ideas and inspire voter turnout leading up to the midterm elections. The event includes an electronic bus by Jenny Holzer & March For Our Lives and features Aja Monet, Alex Ebert, Beau Sia, Jammal Lemy, Kristina Wong, Madame Gandhi, Muna Malik, and Philip Agnew, and others.

Swing Left is hosting a free (RSVP for a ticket) night of music, comedy and activism at the Palace Theater to promote The Last Weekend, an effort to get people out to vote. Featured performers include The Bird and The Bee with Dave Grohl, Moby, Karen O and Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Nap Eyes are playing at the Moroccan Lounge with Will Fox and runnner opening

 

Friday

The Velaslavasay Panorama will be opening its doors as part of 24th Street Theatre’s free annual Día de los Muertos Festival and will host performances and art demonstrations and more for the event

It’s the last of the performance nights celebrating the Triforium. Performers tonight include Thao Nguyen (of Thao & The Get Down Stay Down), Taiko Projects, world champion whistler Molly Lewis, Restless Nites DJs, and “onsite scent activations” by the Institute for Art and Olfaction

Crooked Colours are playing at the El Rey Theatre with Evan Giia and Wolves

Cloud Nothings are playing at the Teragram Ballroom with Shells and Divinity Band opening

 

Saturday

Grand Ave Arts All Access is a free day of arts and programs including a scavenger hunt at The Broad, free tours of the Central Library and the theaters at The Music Center, musical performances by the Colburn School and the LA Chamber Orchestra, free all day admission at MOCA and more. Also make sure to head to Grand Park to check out the altars that were created for Día de los Muertos.

FIDLAR are playing at the Hollywood Palladium with special guests Dilly Dally and The Side Eyes

Tropicalia Fest is a big two day festival taking place at Queen Mary Park in Long Beach. Morrissey and Cardi B are headlining a huge list of bands that include Mazzy Star, Mon Laferte, Natalie Lafourcade, Ronnie Spector, Leo Dan, Allah-Las, Surf Curse, Vundabar, and many, many more

Hard Day of the Dead festival is at Los Angeles Historic Park with performers that include Justice, Die Antwoord and Cashmere Cat

Great Lake Swimmers are playing at The Echo with Native Harrow opening

The Menzingers are playing at The Regent Theater with Tiny Moving Parts and Daddy Issues opening

LACMA is hosting Veterans in the Arts and Humanities Day- Celebration and Film Screening– a free event with screenings of the short films created in the Veterans Make Movies program

The Fowler Museum is having an Arts of Africa Festival- a day of African inspired food, music, storytelling and more

La Luz are playing at The Echo with Shy Boys opening

Art Buzz, ICA LA’s happy hour, returns with a tour of their Adrian Piper exhibit by curator Jamillah James and Director of Learning and Engagement Asuka Hisa (free)

Celebrating the illumination of the Triforium downtown, there will be three Friday events- this week has performances by Reggie Watts, the Bob Baker Marionettes, Jherek Bischoff + Quartet, Dublab DJs, and onsite scent activations by the Institute for Art and Olfaction (free but RSVP)

Visual artist Edgar Arceneaux will present his first live work, Until, Until, Until, about Ben Vereen’s partially censored performance for  Ronald Reagan’s inaugural celebration in 1981, at the Bootleg Theater (also on Saturday)

Drake is having a crazy week in the news with his continuing beef with Pusha T- and tonight or Saturday night you can see him perform with the Migos  at The Forum

At LACE in Hollywood, C3LA will be performing a live score to the 1928 silent film The Fall of the House of Usher, using only a capella voices

The Joy Formidable are playing at the Lodge Room with Tancred opening

 

Saturday

Demon Dayz Festival taking place at Pico Rivera Sports Arena & Grounds, is a great day of music that includes performances by Kilo Kish, Gorillaz, Erykah Badu, The Internet, Little Simz and more

The Regent Theater is hosting the LA premiere of The Man from Mo’Wax, a documentary on the creator of the Mo’ Wax record label James Lavelle. Lavelle famously formed Unkle with DJ Shadow, which had the very popular collaborative album Psyence Fiction. James Lavelle will also be playing a DJ set, ticketed separately, for the event.

LAND is hosting Wild Art Party at Blue Roof Studios with live performances by Maceo Paisley, Paul Pescador, Julie Weitz, and Physical Plastic (free)

Cayucas are headlining a free day/night of music for the free block party Sunstock Solar Festival in Hollywood

Draemings are playing at the Lodge Room with Crook and Honey Child opening

Death Cab for Cutie are at the Orpheum Theatre

Downtown Art Walk is back- this time in addition to the art, you can check out a holiday concert on the world’s largest harp (at 6 and 8pm at City National Tower)

At LACMA, Art + Technology Lab grant recipient Nana Oforiatta-Ayim is launching phase one of her project, Cultural Encyclopaedia, a large-scale documentation and archive effort dedicated to mapping cultural production on the African continent. The second part of the program will feature a short film documenting Oforiatta-Ayim’s use of the kiosk as a model for the traveling museum as well as a collector of culture and history. (free but ticket required)

Friday

There is a free party hosted by the Triforium Project for the 40th anniversary of Joseph Young’s sculpture. There will be music, speakers, cake, and a chance to learn about the project which hopes to restore the sculpture to its former musical and light glory.

LACMA is showing Fritz Lang’s film M in conjunction with the exhibition New Objectivity: Modern German Art in the Weimar Republic, 1919–1933 ($10)

The Million Dollar Theatre is showing Die Hard and Gaslamp Killer is Dj’ing a pre-party with holiday cocktails

Bergamot Station is having a Holiday Open House with music, free portrait painting, food and drinks to enjoy while checking out the galleries

There are still tickets available for the Carol Bus which will make stops around downtown LA while you sing Christmas Carols guided by two professional singers from the LA Master Chorale. $55 gets you on the bus, cookies, hot chocolate, a song book and a stop at a bar for hot toddies/mulled wine
