This week from Thursday to Sunday (8/15-8/18/19) is Echo Park Rising and there are SO MANY bands playing- all for FREE! (full list here) There are also deals from local businesses, DJ sets, and more, happening as well so make sure to check out their website.

In the listings below I have chosen some of the best shows to see for each day.  I’ve also made a playlist if you want to check out some of the bands ahead of time.

As part of Hammer Museum’s Summer Concert Series, Pavo Pavo will be performing in the courtyard. Get there early for happy hour from 6:30-7:30pm and to check out the galleries until 8pm.

Poet Amanda Gorman will be reading at MOCA Grand Avenue and entrance to both MOCA galleries is free this evening

Y La Bamba are performing at The Echo with Rituals of Mine and Vanessa Zamora opening

Bleached are playing at the Moroccan Lounge with The Linda Lindas

Hollywood Night Market at Yamashiro is a lovely way to have some food and drinks while enjoying beautiful views of the city- free shuttles leave from the Mosaic parking lot

 

Friday

The Underground Museum is showing Arthur Jafa’s The White Album and Jean-Luc Godard’s The Image Book. There will be a short conversation with  Arthur Jafa between films. (free)

Business of Dreams and Jo Passed are opening for Mauno at the Bootleg Theater

Jackie Mendoza is playing a free show at The Love Song with Ed Balloon and YUS

How Did This Get Made?, a podcast hosted by Paul Scheer, June Diane Raphael and Jason Mantzoukas, is having a live performance at The Wiltern

The Music Center’s Dance DTLA, a free night of dance instruction and music in different styles, takes place tonight with a hip-hop theme

Freddie Gibbs & Mad Lib are performing at The Novo

Draemings are playing a free show at the Levitt Pavilion with Vaya Futuro, El Mañana, and Bananaleafboy + XOLO

 

Saturday

Ever Present (formerly Friday Flights) is a free night of artistic performances taking place at The Getty. This iteration of the series, Cosmos, will include performances by Deradoorian, Carolyn Pennypacker Riggs, Jennifer Moon & Laub, and A.S.T.R.A.L.O.R.A.C.L.E.S

Cyndi Lauper is performing at the Hollywood Bowl with their orchestra and jazz singer Cécile McLorin Salvant opening (this show is also taking place on Friday)

Hauser & Wirth is screening Britt Banks’ film Ronald: Part 1 with a Q& A with the director to follow (free but register)

The Get Around is a Mar Vista Music & Art Walk and Venice Art Crawl joint event, with music, art vendors and exhibitions, readings, Burning Man art cars, performances, and more- taking place over 3.5 miles from 2-10pm

Vansire and BOYO are playing at The Roxy

Carter Ace and Rat Fancy are opening for Bloodboy at the Bootleg Theater

Drinker are performing at the Bootleg Theater with Misty Mtn and Talker opening

The UCLA Film and Television Archive is showing the 1989 thriller Miracle Mile at the Hammer Museum with director Steve De Jarnatt present for the screening ($9)

The Egyptian Theatre is showing a double feature of Jack Nicholson films- Chinatown and the sequel The Two Jakes

Independent Shakespeare Co. is having free performances of the play Twelfth Night in Griffith Park all weekend- tonight includes Drag Queen Story Hour with Pickle reading a children’s version of Twelfth Night

Thursday through Sunday

Photoville, the free annual photo festival with galleries built from repurposed shipping containers, returns for its second week in Century Park with programming that includes nighttime projections, talks, workshops, family activities, and a beer garden. While there check out the exhibition CONTACT HIGH: A Visual History of Hip-Hop, which showcases the work of hip hop photographers, at Annenberg Space for Photography.

 

Friday

Broncho will be performing at the Natural History Museum with Lauren Ruth Ward for the museum’s monthly First Friday event. This year’s programming explores Forces of Nature and for this evening they will have speakers discussing California’s floods. There will also be DJs and food trucks.

L.A. Live is having a block party with $5 food and drink items at many of the restaurants, pop up shops, street performers, live painting by several artists, and more (free)

Beach Goons and No Parents are opening for SWMRS at The Belasco Theater

The Church will be at The Regent Theater performing their album Starfish

 

Friday and Saturday

Union Station is celebrating its 80th Anniversary for two days with live entertainment, an electronic photo exhibition of the station’s history, special menu items at the station’s restaurants, tours, a marketplace and more

 

Saturday

Hammer Museum is hosting Omniaudience, a program comprised of listening sessions, conversations, and performances from 1:30-5pm. For this iteration- Nikita Gale will have a listening session devoted to the creation, distribution, and reception of River Deep, Mountain High, which was produced by Phil Spector and performed by Tina Turner; Alexander Provan will deliver a lecture, illustrated with chart-toppers, on the use of consumer-behavior data and neurobiology research in the production of pop songs; C. Spencer Yeh will present a live quadraphonic performance of material from The RCA Mark II (Primary Information, 2017), which is composed of recordings of non-musical sounds created with the eponymous, 60-year-old synthesizer; and Nour Mobarak will speak about the vocalization of sound and phonetics in relation to her recent work. She will then be joined in conversation by Gale, Provan, and Yeh to discuss “how recordings of human voices quantify and categorize speakers—and how the components of language might, alternatively, be experienced as indeterminate sonic materials”.

Otomo Yoshihide and David Novak will be at Blum & Poe to discuss “noise, an underground music made through an amalgam of feedback, distortion, and electronic effects, which first emerged as a genre in the 1980s, circulating on cassette tapes traded between fans in Japan, Europe, and North America”. (free)

Melodie McDaniel will be signing her book Riding Through Compton about the participants of a youth riding and equestrian program in the neighborhood at Arcana Books. A conversation will follow with book contributors Amelia Fleetwood and Mayisha Akbar (who leads the program).

Later that evening Weirdo Night returns to Zebulon with performances by Dynasty Handbag, Drum Run, and Smiling Beth and more

Artist Gary Lang will be in conversation with artist Sarah Jones at Wilding Cran Gallery where Lang currently has an exhibition

Art Buzz, ICA LA’s happy hour, returns with a tour of their Adrian Piper exhibit by curator Jamillah James and Director of Learning and Engagement Asuka Hisa (free)

Celebrating the illumination of the Triforium downtown, there will be three Friday events- this week has performances by Reggie Watts, the Bob Baker Marionettes, Jherek Bischoff + Quartet, Dublab DJs, and onsite scent activations by the Institute for Art and Olfaction (free but RSVP)

Visual artist Edgar Arceneaux will present his first live work, Until, Until, Until, about Ben Vereen’s partially censored performance for  Ronald Reagan’s inaugural celebration in 1981, at the Bootleg Theater (also on Saturday)

Drake is having a crazy week in the news with his continuing beef with Pusha T- and tonight or Saturday night you can see him perform with the Migos  at The Forum

At LACE in Hollywood, C3LA will be performing a live score to the 1928 silent film The Fall of the House of Usher, using only a capella voices

The Joy Formidable are playing at the Lodge Room with Tancred opening

 

Saturday

Demon Dayz Festival taking place at Pico Rivera Sports Arena & Grounds, is a great day of music that includes performances by Kilo Kish, Gorillaz, Erykah Badu, The Internet, Little Simz and more

The Regent Theater is hosting the LA premiere of The Man from Mo’Wax, a documentary on the creator of the Mo’ Wax record label James Lavelle. Lavelle famously formed Unkle with DJ Shadow, which had the very popular collaborative album Psyence Fiction. James Lavelle will also be playing a DJ set, ticketed separately, for the event.

LAND is hosting Wild Art Party at Blue Roof Studios with live performances by Maceo Paisley, Paul Pescador, Julie Weitz, and Physical Plastic (free)

Cayucas are headlining a free day/night of music for the free block party Sunstock Solar Festival in Hollywood

Draemings are playing at the Lodge Room with Crook and Honey Child opening
