So…a lot of events have been canceled already for this weekend due to coronavirus, including Pasadena’s ArtNight. I am listing events currently (as of this writing) still happening but please follow the links below to the event (and Twitter page if available) to confirm that it is taking place.

Things to do in Los Angeles this weekend (3/12-3/15/20)-

Thursday

Zebulon is showing Silver Jew Documentary, a film by Michael Tully documenting two shows by the Silver Jews in Tel Aviv and an afternoon in Jerusalem during their first-ever tour in 2006, 15 years after its founder David Berman began recording under that name.  Berman passed away in August of 2019. The film is short but there will also be a selection of Silver Jews and Purple Mountains (his later band) videos. It’s a free event but donations and proceeds from this screening will benefit MusiCares, a nonprofit that has provided more than $60 million in health, financial, and rehabilitation resources to musicians in times of need.

Dry Cleaning are playing at El Cid

USA Fellow and five-time Grammy-winning trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard will be at California African American Museum (CAAM) to discuss his legendary career and his nearly three-decades-long collaboration with director Spike Lee, with Hamza Walker, executive director of the Los Angeles nonprofit art space LAXART, moderating the conversation. (free but register)

Heart Attack Man and Better Love are opening for Knuckle Puck at The Echo

Downtown Los Angeles Artwalk returns for its monthly event with various galleries staying open late

 

Friday

Shannon Lay is playing with Boy Scouts at Zebulon

The Strokes are playing at The Forum with King Princess and Alvvays

Burgerama 2020 is taking place at The Echo/Echoplex with a huge lineup of Burger Records bands including The Mummies, Tomorrow’s Tulips, Cosmonauts, Healing Gems, Reckling, Psychic Bloom, The Premonitions,  and many more

A bit further afield at Fox Theater Pomona is Minor League Music Spring Fest with a ton of Southern California bands including Sad Park, The High Curbs, Kicked Off The Streets, Makeout Reef, Ignant Benches and more

Love is Gay Fest 2020 is taking place at the Bootleg Theater featuring Polartropica, Lucy & La Mer, WASI, Guppy and Rat Fancy

Double features continue at the Aero Theatre with Out of Sight and Jackie Brown

 

Sunday

HTRK are playing at the Echoplex with Dry Cleaning and OTZI opening

The Egyptian Theatre has Disarm the Right to Violence!: Recent Mexican Experimental Short Films, a selection of films produced between 2018-2020 in intensive filmmaking workshops at Catedra Ingmar Bergman and Filmoteca UNAM, in collaboration with DocsMX. There will be a conversation to follow with filmmaker Andrea Rodea.

Jazz artist Cécile McLorin Salvant is performing at the Walt Disney Concert Hall with “her most ambitious project yet, combining jazz and bluegrass in the poignant fairytale Ogresse, a wickedly delicious work about a human-eating monster who lives in the woods”.

Artist Sadie Barnette and her father Rodney Barnette will be celebrating their shared birthday at ICA LA, with an art talk, DJ, and a performance by Global Street Dance Masquerade- taking place along with her newest project The New Eagle Creek Saloon, a tribute to her father’s bar, Eagle Creek Saloon, the first black-owned gay bar in San Francisco

Downtown LA’s Art Walk returns for its monthly event with lots of galleries in the area staying open late

Snow Tha Product is performing at the El Rey Theatre

Numb.er are opening for Drahla at The Echo

Mega Bog, L.A. Takedown and Spookey Ruben are performing free at Zebulon with Dent May DJ’ing

 

Friday

ArtNight Pasadena returns for its biannual event with a free evening of live music, performances, and free admission to museums and galleries in Pasadena. There will also be free shuttles to take you around to the various locations.

Hassan Hajjaj: My Rockstars Experimental- Live has the Moroccan phototographer, designer and filmmaker, creating sets and clothes from his portraits and videos- this time for the stage of The Ford and including live performances by musicians Afrikan Boy, Bumi, Simo Lagnawi, Marques Toliver, Gail Ann Dorsey and Omar Offendum at The Ford. My Rockstars Experimental, Volume I was shown at LACMA in 2013.

Psychic Twin is having a free single release party show at Gold Diggers with Drum & Lace opening

Culver City Arts District is hosting its annual Art Walk and Roll, a free festival with live music, food trucks, and more, plus a chance to see all the art shows happening in the area.

If you are in Culver City, head to Luis de Jesus Los Angeles to hear artist Laura Krifka discuss her paintings currently on view at the gallery

2019 Eyeworks Festival of Experimental Animation has three different programs starting at 3pm at REDCAT

Arto Lindsay is playing at Zebulon featuring Rodrigo Amarante, along with Ofir Ganon playing solo/duo with Chris Bear (Grizzly Bear)

At Fowler Museum on Sunday afternoons and Wednesday evenings, to accompany its exhibition Through Positive Eyes, seven HIV-positive Angelenos known as the Los Angeles Through Positive Eyes Collective will share their photographs and personal narratives (today beginning at 1pm)

Pearl Charles of The Blank Tapes is headlining a night of bands at The Echo that includes Big Search, GospelbeacH, and Golden Daze

MOCA Curatorial Assistant Rebecca Matalon is leading a walk through of Mickalene Thomas: Do I Look Like a Lady? on MOCA Grand Ave’s free night and/or check out the last week of Doug Aitken’s exhibition Electric Earth at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA (also free tonight)

Head to LACMA to experience Ana Prvacki’s Tent, quintet, bows and elbows, “a sculpture, a sound piece, and a performance”. It will be activated at 4:15 with a conversation and book signing to follow. (free)

Things to do in Los Angeles this weekend (2/11-2/14/16)-

Thursday

James Supercave are playing at Resident in DTLA

The Downtown Art Walk has a music theme and includes a mini tribute to producer J Dilla. While at the art walk there will be shuttles to LERATA’s SKYLINE 2016 Preview Event which features an interactive architecture installation as well as a DJ, free cupcakes and hot chocolate. Also nearby is Oddwalk 2.0, a one night only show from Oddville. A Creative Space that includes over 100 local artists

It’s also the opening night of a four night event at the new Project Space on 7th Street. Tonight is the opening of  Aaron Rose’s La Rosa Social Club, an art bar/installation with a group of artists contributing work  (free but RSVP required)

The Hammer Museum is screening The Haunted Sword, a film of a live kabuki performance. Afterwards there will be free food and free limited-edition Kabuki-inspired Uniqlo t-shirts and tote bags.

Frank Gehry is in conversation with Michael Govan at LACMA (free but standby)

Naughty by Nature are at the Regent Theater with A-F-R-O

Celebrate The Year of the Monkey in Chinatown– The Golden Dragon Parade runs from 1-3pm and there is also a festival all day with performances, workshops and more

Blum and Poe gallery in Culver City is premiering A Portrait of Henry Taylor, a film by August Blum which will be accompanied by live music sets by Detachable Men and The Florida Mistakes

John Waters new one-man show This Filthy World: Dirtier and Filthier, is at The Luckman Fine Arts Complex at Cal State

For his show Hydration at Steve Turner gallery in Hollywood, Yung Jake is having his opening from 10pm-2am with DJs Softest Hard, Sonny Digital and Lil Yachty

Mrs.Magician are playing with Dead Heavens at The Hi Hat in Highland Park

Sunday

The LA Marathon is this Sunday so get out and cheer the runners or take a good look at the map and plan accordingly, it will be challenging to get around

The Metro is having a special free art tour of the works and architecture in their train stations for Valentine’s Day. The Independent Shakespeare Company
will be accompanying the tour and performing love scenes from select Shakespearean plays. First-come, first-served leaving from Union Station and ending at Hollywood/Western.
