Goon- Choke Throat

This week from Thursday to Sunday (8/15-8/18/19) is Echo Park Rising and there are SO MANY bands playing- all for FREE! (full list here) There are also deals from local businesses, DJ sets, and more, happening as well so make sure to check out their website.

In the listings below I have chosen some of the best shows to see for each day.  I’ve also made a playlist if you want to check out some of the bands ahead of time.

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo with Oscuro de Mayo, a free event at Resident with a DJ set by Dave Parley of Prayers and live performances by August Eve and Sister Mantos

In conjunction with the exhibition In the Fields of Empty Days: The Intersection of Past and Present in Iranian Art, LACMA is hosting a free panel discussion “regarding how women operate and negotiate their way in Iran as artists, from the perspective of the film and music industries as well as the fine arts.” The panelists are Newsha Tavakolian (Tehran-based artist and documentary photographer, whose work is represented in the exhibition), Dr. Nacim Pak-Shiraz (film historian, University of Edinburgh), and Dr. Nahid Siamdoust (Post-doctoral Associate, Yale University, and author of Soundtrack of the Revolution: The Politics of Music in Iran) and the discussion will be moderated by LACMA curator Linda Komaroff.

Stories Of: Jealousy Edition is taking place at The Regent Theater with storytellers that include Shirley Manson, Aparna Nancherla and Madame Gandhi, DJ sets, live music, and proceeds going to Peace Over Violence

The Women’s March is taking place in downtown LA- moving from Pershing Square to City Hall

Joyce Manor are playing two shows at Union Station– tickets are still available for the earlier one (3pm) with Surf Curse and Peach Kelli Pop

For the final weekend of Mike Kelley: Kandors 1999-2011 at Hauser & Wirth, Extended Organ, Lonely Street and Telecaves will be performing (free)

NAVEL.LA (co-organized with Ghosting TV and WOAH) is hosting the premiere screening of ECLIPSECORE, 27 artists respond to the 2017 North American Eclipse, which will also include live music and a DJ set, and a discussion with researchers from NASA JPL (free but RSVP) and donate

It’s the first night of Echo Park Rising, a free multi-venue, all ages music festival.
