After hearing the sad news of Shelley Duvall’s passing, I decided to watch a few films from her filmography and started with 3 Women, released in 1977. Based on a dream writer/director Robert Altman had, the film follows Duvall and Sissy Spacek as their lives and identities intertwine in the California desert. Later a third woman played by Janice Rule, becomes more important in the pair’s world.
Using reflections, water, mirrors, mirrored actions, and twins, Altman creates a mysterious space for these women to inhabit. Adding to the unsettling energy of the film are a series of murals created by artist Bodhi Wind (Charles Kuklis).
It’s definitely worth a watch, with an ambiguous ending that has been subject to many interpretations.

Del the Funky Homosapien is at the Echoplex with DJ Qbert and street artist Mear One live painting
LA Live’s Dark Nights event returns with $5 food and drink specials, live art installations and performances, music, a market, fire dancers and more (free)
Annenberg Space for Photography is hosting a panel on lifestyle and commercial photography with Gray Malin, Natalie James, Lauren Randolph and Stephanie Todaro and moderated by Ilana Saul (11am-1pm -$10)

On the more quiet end of the performance spectrum, Temporary Space LA is having “An Early evening of Ambient” with performances by Daniel Lanois + Rocco Deluca, Musician’s Friend [Brian Foote + M. Geddes Gengras], and Ken Camden, as well as an open bar (free but RSVP)
Nearby LACMA is having their late night party- Muse ‘til Midnight feat. Adrian Younge and Venice Dawn with DJ’s in the galleries and a party in the plaza ($45 for nonmembers/$35 with membership)
Sunday
Thomas Dang, an artist in the Craft and Folk Art Museum’s excellent exhibition of art made by veterans, will be there all day with his pottery wheel giving demonstrations and talking about his ceramic work
Cinefamily is showing Robert Altman’s 1977 film 3 Women, his exploration of female identity starring Sissy Spacek and Shelley Duvall
