Friday Flights, The Getty’s free art and music series, continues with Ian Svenonius’ Escape-ism, a fashion show by label NO SESSO, a music project by Tyler Matthew Oyer, a performance by psych-folk band Gun Outfit, a pop up book shop, and more

Smokescreens are playing a free show with Susan at Highland Park Bowl

Hauser and Wirth is having a one-night-only screening of Paul McCarthy’s cisuM fo dnuoS ehT / The Sound of Music, in which the 1965 film is projected upside down and in reverse (free but register)

Thursday

MOCA’s free music night returns to their Geffen Contemporary location with TT featuring Theresa Wayman from Warpaint, WIVES, Current Joys, and Honey Power DJs

Tonight at Hammer Museum, Made in L.A. 2018 co-curator Erin Christovale will be discussing artist EJ Hill’s practice (for his project he “ran laps around every Los Angeles school he attended, a reflection on the hardships that black, brown, and queer bodies endure as well as their resilience”) with Amanda Hunt, MOCA Los Angeles director of education and public programming and Desert X 2019 co-curator, and artist Texas Isaiah, who collaborated on Hill’s project. WAVVES are playing a free show at FIGat7th with Thumpasaurus opening

French pianist, composer, and musical director for Phoenix and Sebastien Tellier, Chassol, is performing his “ultrascore” project, INDIAMORE, free for Grand Performances. The film will be projected and accompanied by live music.

Filmmaker Catherine Gund’s documentary Hallelujah! Ron Athey: A Story of Deliverance will be screening at the Billy Wilder Theater as part of the Legacy Project screenings curated this season by Zackary Drucker.  Gund, Athey and Drucker will be in person for this event.

La Luz are playing at the Teragram Ballroom with Summer Twins opening

Flora Wiegmann will be performing Reduction Burn, a series of movements with other dancers that reflect on the recent California fires, at Hammer Museum

To celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the East LA Walkouts, Fowler Museum along with the Chicano Studies Research Center will have two days of free programming- on Saturday there will be a speaker’s program with Walkout participants and scholars and on Sunday there will be screenings of the 1995 documentary Taking Back the School, and the 2005 HBO film Walkout! with a Q +A to follow

Artist Luchita Hurtado will be in conversation with Hans Ulrich Obrist at Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery (LAMAG)– free but RSVP (1pm with light refreshments at 2pm)

MOCA Community Day at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA will include activities, performances and two panels with artists and activists- one discussing Art as Transformation and the other Envisioning a Different Framework– both focusing on LA’s homelessness crisis. It’s the second day of the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books with writers that include Jonathan Lethem, Cheech Marin, and Margaret Atwood

It’s also the second day of the California Poppy Festival in Lancaster- a good opportunity to check out some of the bloom in the Antelope Valley this weekend. If you are planning to see some of the “super bloom” you can find info and locations here
