The Verle Annis Gallery at USC is hosting a 5 day pop-up screening of the Ed Ruscha films Premium and Miracle and today is the last day

The Aero Theatre is having a Jean-Luc Godard double feature of Contempt and Le Petit Soldat

Shit Giver and Automatic are opening for Marbled Eye at The Echo

The Odd Market returns to The Autry in Griffith Park with extended museum hours, pop-up shops, a full bar, DJs, and more ($5)

 

Saturday

Artist Teresa Hubbard and Alexander Birchler will be at LACMA to discuss their film installation Flora and accompanying work Bust with curators Stephanie Barron and Philipp Kaiser before it opens on 1/20 at the museum. Flora is a film about unknown American artist Flora Mayo, who had an affair with artist Alberto Giacometti, and the artists’ search for her story.

Joyce Manor are playing at the Hollywood Palladium with AJJ, Jeff Rosenstock, and awakebutstillinbed

The Districts are playing their second night at the Moroccan Lounge with Deeper

The Getty has a free course on French fashion from the time of Marie Antoinette with costume designer Maxwell Barr, which includes the dressing of a live model.  Later in the evening check out a free show by Grammy nominated musicians Los Pleneros de la 21 (free but ticket required- also playing Sunday)

The Women’s March returns around the country and to downtown Los Angeles from Pershing Square to City Hall

 

Sunday

Author and screenwriter Jonathan Ames will be at Zebulon with director/photographer Richard Sandler to host a free screening of Sandler’s films The Gods of Times Square and Radioactive City.

The monthly Pasadena Camera Show & Sale is taking place at the Elks Lodge from 10-3pm ($3 entry)

The Aero Theatre is showing Jean-Luc Godard’s film One Plus One, which combines reflections on politics and social issues of the 1960s with a view of the Rolling Stones creative process during the recording of Sympathy for the Devil

Artist Gala Porras-Kim will be discussing her work from A Universal History of Infamy with curator Megan O’Neil, at LACMA (free but ticket required)

Also at LACMA is a screening of John Carpenter’s classic They Live

Guards and Veronica Bianqui are opening for The Soft White Sixties at The Echo

At REDCAT, LA-based performers Rubén Martínez and Raquel Gutiérrez will be performing VARIEDADES, “an interdisciplinary performance that brings together music, spoken word, theater, comedy and the visual arts, loosely based on the Mexican vaudeville shows of early 20th century”

Surfer Blood are playing at The Hi Hat with Terry Malts opening

Sociologist and writer Greg Snyder will be discussing his book SKATEBOARDING LA at The Last Bookstore with some of the professional skateboarders profiled in the book joining him (free)

De Lux are playing with The Juan Maclean at The Regent Theater

Suno Deko is performing at the Bootleg Theater with special sets/collaborations with Zach Tetreault, Cyrus Gengras, Alex Somers, and Julianna Barwick

For the final weekend of Mike Kelley: Kandors 1999-2011 at Hauser & Wirth, Extended Organ, Lonely Street and Telecaves will be performing (free)

There are still tickets available for the later show at The Broad of En Cuatro Patas: The Formaldehyde Trip, a work by Mexico City artist Naomi Rincón Gallardo, that includes songs and videos dedicated to murdered Mixtec activist Alberta “Bety” Cariño, performed live with props (part of Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA)

Thursday

CAFAM is hosting a zine making workshop with L.A. Zinefest followed by a special film screening of Flight in Heels and a reading with the “Afrofuturistic women’s liberation artist collective”, #SNATCHPOWER. ($7 includes on drink, access to the gallery shows and materials for the workshop- RSVP requested)

The Damned are playing with Alice Bag and the Sissy Bears at the Belasco theater

Bleached, The Regrettes, Upset and The Side Eyes are playing at the Echoplex

Terry George who directed Hotel Rwanda and more recently The Promise, about the Armenian genocide, will be in conversation with producer and physician Eric Esrailian and Dr. Stephen D. Smith, executive director of the USC Shoah Foundation, at the Hammer museum, moderated by journalist and filmmaker Carla Garapedian. They will be discussing the challenges and politics of representing real-world atrocities within the constraints of the film medium. (free)

The Natural History Museum is having its First Friday event, this time with lectures on the future of food, DJs, and performances by the bands Sunflower Bean and Tonstartssbandht

The Aero Theatre is showing a double feature of Walter Hill’s films The Warriors and Streets of Fire with Hill discussing them in between screenings

It might be worth taking a road trip to see Sigur Rós play at the Santa Barbara Bowl

Great Horror Movie Night is showing a double feature of Fright Night and Ghostbusters at the Griffith Park Old Zoo

Saturday

The 6th Annual Kite Festival is taking place adjacent to the Santa Monica Pier from 11am-4pm and will be honoring Disney artist Tyrus Wong

Broke LA (formerly BROKECHELLA) is back with bands that include James Supercave, Bloodboy, and BOYO, art installations, comedians and more for $25.

Or you could head to The Observatory in Santa Ana for the two day festival- When We Were Young. Saturday’s lineup includes Morrissey, AFI, Cage The Elephant, Joyce Manor, Beach Fossils, and more.. ($100 for Saturday only)

Jason Reitman brings his Live Read series back-this time at The Theatre at Ace Hotel- for a reading of Juno with Ellen Page and Jennifer Garner reprising their roles from the film and Tracee Ellis Ross, Tig Notaro, Alia Shawkat, Kristin Wiig and more providing additional voices (all proceeds benefit Planned Parenthood)

Artists Justin Cole and York Chang will be giving a talk about their exhibition at Samuel Freeman gallery in Culver City

At The Observatory in Santa Ana it’s day two of the festival- When We Were Young. Band today include Descendents, FIDLAR, Silversun Pickups, Dr. Dog, Tijuana Panthers, Sunflower Bean and more ($60 Sunday only)

Hammer Museum is hosting Stand Up and Fight Back: Tactics and Strategies for Effective Creative Activism at The Wiltern with Reverend James Lawson and Nadine Bloch (free but RSVP)
