This week from Thursday to Sunday (8/15-8/18/19) is Echo Park Rising and there are SO MANY bands playing- all for FREE! (full list here) There are also deals from local businesses, DJ sets, and more, happening as well so make sure to check out their website.

In the listings below I have chosen some of the best shows to see for each day.  I’ve also made a playlist if you want to check out some of the bands ahead of time.

The Broad is offering free admission to their Jasper Johns exhibition on the first Thursday of the month- (today and 5/3) from 4-7pm and afterwards you can head across the street for MOCA’s free night

Artist Jennifer Gutierrez Morgan is leading a milagro making workshop for CAFAM’s CraftNight– $10 includes supplies, drinks and snacks

Cherry Glazerr are opening for The Breeders and Elijah Wood will be playing a DJ set at The Fonda Theatre

Vera Sola is playing at the Bootleg Theater with Hush Arbors opening

Nightmare Air are playing with Draemings at the Bootleg Theater

Natural History Museum’s First Fridays event includes a tour of the History Department, a discussion of oil and its role in the history of LA, DJs, and music by Chelsea Jade and Jamila Woods

The Independent Art Book Fair starts today and runs until Sunday at 939 Studios DTLA

The Breeders are playing at The Theatre at Ace Hotel with Post Pink opening

The Music Center is transforming into a “Disco wonderland clad in gold and mirrors” for its event- Sleepless: The Music Center After Hours. The event begins at 11:30pm and runs until 3 am- with large scale projections, roller skaters (Friday), DJs, pop-up dance happenings, screenings, art installations, live music, a makeup station, and more (plus cocktails and small bites)

Saturday

Artist Walead Beshty will be in conversation with executive director of LAXART, Hamza Walker at Regen Projects

Feels are playing a free show for Hipsville’s 1 Year Anniversary at The Offbeat-A Bar on York, with Cat Scan opening

Melted are having a record release party at The Hi Hat with Awakebutstillinbed, Decent Criminal, and Pancho and the Wizards also performing

Ex Stains and Hit Bargain are opening for DJ Jonathan Toubin’s NY Night Train party at Zebulon

Electric Six are playing at the Bootleg Theater with The Manx and Northern Faces opening

Bergamot Station is hosting The Night of Ideas, ” a 7-hour marathon of debates, live performances, readings, art installations, screenings and music”  that  explore the idea of utopias (free with registration)

As part of The Broad’s program The Un-Private Collection, musician and art collector, Flea, will be speaking with artist Thomas Houseago (who has work in The Broad’s current exhibition Creature) at The Theatre at Ace Hotel

There are still tickets available to see photographer Candace Feit discuss her work with the transgender community in India at the Annenberg Space for Photography (free with registration)

Seratones are playing with Communist Daughter and Ever So Android at The Echo

My favorite of the LA art fairs, stARTup Art Fair returns to the Highland Gardens Hotel (opening on Friday and closing Sunday). The programming is worth looking into and last year each of the independent artists took over one of the unique hotel rooms and turned it into a temporary gallery  (discounts on Goldstar and Groupon)

Night on Broadway returns to celebrate the history of the famous downtown LA street, with music and performances both on the street and in the historic theaters, all free

Art Los Angeles Contemporary continues at The Barker Hangar (also Friday and Sunday- discounts on Goldstar)

Frank Turner & The Sleeping Souls are playing at The Wiltern

Dustin Lovelis is opening for Prism Tats at The Hi Hat

The big Museum Free-For-All is on with museums that include LACMA, the Craft & Folk Art Museum, Descanso Gardens, MOCA, and more

REDCAT is screening the documentary The Murder of Fred Hampton: The Struggle Continues by Howard Alk and Michael Gray, with a panel discussion to follow with artist Sam Durant, activist and educator Ericka Huggins and UCLA scholar Robin Kelley
