This has been a great year for sculpture shows in Los Angeles, and this selection of work from artists based in this city is one of the best.

From the press release:

This group exhibition will address representations of the domestic object in fine art, including issues of still life, consumerism, gender, and identity. Exploring destabilization and the transformative shifts in cultural and aesthetic value that elevate the ordinary to art, the exhibition examines how everyday objects can be lifted from the mundane.

Today (11/8) is the last day to see this impressive show at Angles Gallery.

Kehinde Wiley The World Stage: Haiti at Roberts & Tilton

Today (10/25) is the last day to see Kehinde Wiley‘s The World Stage:Haiti, the latest in his series of global portraits. For this exhibition he altered his usual process for finding subjects.

From the press release:

…Kehinde Wiley found beauty in Haiti bringing it to the forefront by creating his own beauty pageants, in the long tradition of pageant culture native to the region. In previous World Stage iterations, Wiley conducted his castings on the streets. With The World Stage:Haiti, he employed a different approach specific to the culture: open calls on the radio, posters around the streets of Jacmel, Jalouise and Port-au-Prince culminating in beauty pageants. Across the Caribbean, pageants serve as mass entertainment events, allowing locals to do more than exhibit poise, talent and physical beauty; pageants are a manifestation of collective cultural values. Wiley’s pageant winners were chosen randomly rather than through a judging process. By showing the pageant contestants paintings of European masters on which the new works would be based, Wiley deepened the connection between both place and era.

For a really fascinating look at his previous work and process, I recommend watching the recent PBS documentary Kehinde Wiley: An Economy of Grace, available on their website (free).

Oliver Jones Love the Skin You’re In at Gusford Gallery (images via their site)

Plastic surgery is popular topic, especially in Los Angeles, and even more so this week, after a famous actress reappeared looking different enough to cause a flurry of media and public speculation.

British artist Oliver Jones’ photorealist drawings, created in colored chalk pastel, look at and question the beauty industry and our appearance obsessed world. In many of the images the subject is looking directly into the eyes of the viewer. Are we judging them, relating to them, questioning them? Is it possible to love the skin you’re in? And if so, for how long?

This exhibition closes 10/25.

The paintings in Sam Falls’ current exhibition at Hannah Hoffman Gallery are created by taking local vegetation, adding pigments and letting the elements, including rain form silhouettes on the canvas. The results are striking, especially the larger canvases. This show continues through 10/25.

The area on and around Highland Avenue between Fountain and Melrose is a great place to check out art. If you are there this weekend, these exhibitions are also worth a look:

Doug Aitken at Regen Projects (closing 10/11)

Hannah Hummel at Diane Rosenstein Fine Arts (closing 10/11)

Lisa Anne Auerbach at Gavlak Gallery (closing 10/18)

Also in the area- Brazilian artist Eduardo Kobra’s mural is between Fountain and Lexington on Highland.

Doug Aitken- Still Life (images via Regen Projects)

From the press release:

Spanning a variety of media encompassing photography, sculpture, publications, sound, and single and multi-channel video installations, Aitken’s work explores the modern landscape and posits possibilities for new uncharted frontiers. This exhibition, the artist’s fourth solo presentation at Regen Projects, will feature an installation of new sculptural objects within a labyrinthine space designed to create an experience of unexpected encounters and a sense of mystery and discovery for the viewer to navigate.

This is a really fun show. Tomorrow (10/4), there will be a performance by Doug Aitken and then he will be signing his book. This event begins at 4pm with the book signing from 6-8pm.
