Hannah Whitaker– Arctic Landscape (Pink Sky) 2014

For Hannah Whitaker’s first solo exhibition in Los Angeles, Cold Wave, at M+B Gallery, she combines photos of nature scenes, naked bodies and other images with a series of hand cut paper screens that together create abstract geometric forms and patterns. The images remain recognizable but are given added dimension through this process. Other work in the show concentrates more on graphic shapes and less on traditional imagery, but the strongest images are the ones in which something familiar is seen with a different perspective through this unique technique.

This show closes 4/26/14.

Yoshitomo Nara’s solo exhibiton at Blum & Poe (closing 4/12) is filled with new works by the artist on a large scale including a room of bronze sculptures and some of his large paintings in others (an example of both pictured above). On the second floor of the gallery is a retrospective look at the artist’s drawings throughout his thirty year career. Whimsical and at times melancholy, the wide eyed figures fascinate.

Also in Culver City and closing 4/12/14-

Angles Gallery in collaboration with Hinge Modern presents THE ARTIST’S HANDS CONTINUUM by Rena Small. Small has been photographing her friend’s hands since 1984, and each black and white photograph represents the person in a unique way. Several of the hands included belong to familiar names.

The group show at Maloney Fine Art includes work by Joel Otterson, and some unique ceramic creations which look like bizarre vinyl toys by Maberry + Walker.

Daniel Joseph Martinez– The report of my death is an exaggeration; Memoirs of Becoming Narrenschiff

At Roberts & Tilton until 3/8, Martinez’s show is comprised of two parts- the first is a group of text paintings and small framed polaroids of mysterious objects surrounding a group of unearthed bonsai trees in the center of the gallery. In the second gallery is a group of photos of buildings around Los Angeles with Martinez’s text added.

Martinez’s work for this exhibition is based on Das Narrenschiff, or Ship of Fools, a satirical work created by Sebastian Brant in 1494, which focused on human folly in society. For three years Martinez traveled around Los Angeles on the bus with this in mind, observing the other passengers and his surroundings.  The result is a grim but affecting look into the perspective he gained from his travels.

D.J. Hall– Into Plein Air

D.J.Hall’s larger paintings as well as her smaller gouaches and watercolors of nature taken from her small notebooks are currently being shown until 2/22 at Craig Krull Gallery at Bergamot Station. Also being shown are Los Angeles photographer John Humble’s bright color photos of Pico Boulevard.

Elias Hansen: I’m a long way from home and I don’t really know these roads.

Anat Ebgi gallery is showing Elias Hansen’s new sculptures until 2/22. There are numerous beakers and other glassware combined with natural materials in setups that look, especially when lit with colored lights, like bizarre science experiments, or possibly something more suspicious.

Also in Culver City and closing 2/22:

Patrick Wilson’s geometric paintings in “Steak Night” seem to move the longer you stare at them- at Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects.

Tony de los Reyes’s show “Border Theory” at Angles Gallery paintings and lithographs are both abstract and political as the lines within them follow the natural border between the United States and Mexico created by the Rio Grande (or Rio Bravo).

Kevin Cooley and Phillip Andrew Lewis have a show called “Unexplored Territory” at Kopeikin Gallery that consists of video and photography that explores human’s desire to control natural elements like fire, and balances this concept with machines acting in ways that make them seem human. There is a video in the center room in which two fans on one power cord seem to be in a sort of dance/fight.

At LAXART, Brendan Fowler recreates photos with a commercial industrial embroidery machine creating a blend of photography and sculpture.

Hassan Hajjaj work from the show- My Rock Stars: Volume 2

Hassan Hajjaj has two great shows (and one piece in a third) currently up in the Los Angeles area.

His show at the Gusford Gallery (pictured above), is filled with brightly colored images surrounded by frames containing Moroccan products.

From their press release:

Through costuming, posturing and mise en scène, Hajjaj blends African, Arabic, European and Western cultural signifiers in a vibrant fusion of contemporary globalized society. The identities of this international collection of musicians, dancers, fashion designers, capoeira masters and restauranteurs have been obscured, and these personal inspirations from Hajjaj’s life have been immortalized as his very own ‘Rock Stars’.

This show closes 2/22/14.

Currently at LACMA is My Rock Stars Experimental, Volume 1, 2012 a video installation composed of nine screens- each with a different musician performing on sets similar to those in the photographs at the Gosford Gallery. As each performer begins their song, the others turn to watch. Located across from the elevators on the fourth floor of the Ahmanson building, it can be a challenge to take it all in.

He also has a piece  in the recently opened show Fútbol: The Beautiful Game.

Liz Larner at Regen Projects

This is the final weekend (closes 2/15) for Liz Larner’s show at Regen Projects.

From the press release:

Regen Projects is pleased to present an exhibition of new sculptures by Los Angeles-based artist Liz Larner.The exhibition brings together her recent navigations of geological poiesis, fissures, folds, curves, and reconfigurations, and includes wall-mounted ceramic slabs, a large stainless steel X sculpture, two paper-based planchette pieces, early photographs, and a new “culture” sculpture. Larner has shown at Regen Projects since 1989, and this presentation marks her seventh solo exhibition at the gallery.

Her earlier photos, taken near the pool at the Tropicana Motel in Los Angeles are located in the side gallery and are particularly worth noting. In one a jar containing guitar strings and water sits near people sunbathing. In another, a flask with a mix of liquors hovers near the pool. It’s an interesting juxtaposition, both the objects in the photos, and this series in comparison to her newer work.

The images from Andrew Moore’s show at Couturier Gallery are both beautiful and sad as they show Cuba as it is now, while at the same time the evidence of what it once was is all around.

The beauty of decay is also evident in some of the images from another of Moore’s subjects, Nebraska. These images are currently on view in New York at Yancey Richardson gallery.

Karen Apollonia Müller– Images from the show Far Out

Müller’s photos, currently at Diane Rosenstein Fine Art, are made by altering raw data taken from NASA/JPL.  These abstract images present a new way of looking at the universe and our place within it. There are three series within the show- Citylights, Worldlights and Starlights.

This show closes on 1/18.

John Divola– from the series- Dogs Chasing My Car in the Desert

At the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, another part of the John Divola show, As Far As I Could Get, currently also at LACMA, is open until 1/12.

The Dogs series was shot from Divola’s car as the dogs in the desert chased him while he was photographing abandoned buildings (these images make up another section of the show). According to Divola (when he spoke at LACMA), despite their menacing appearance in the photos, many of the dogs were friendly and mostly just excited to see someone new.

A separate show of Divola’s work called Echo Chamber is at Gallery Luisotti in Bergamot Station until 1/18.
