This colorful mural by Iker Muro (aka MurOne) was created for the 2018 edition of Sacramento’s Wide Open Walls Festival.

From Wide Open Walls about the artist-

Iker Muro (MurOne) is an illustrator and graphic designer who began creating public murals in 2002. Born in Bilbao, Spain, Muro describes his work as “an acid mixture of pop culture, graffiti, illustration, and graphic design.” As a youth, he began painting on skateboards and drawing caricatures of teachers and classmates at his desk in the back of the classroom. He went on to complete his studies in graphic design and has worked in many different disciplines including graffiti, graphic design, prints, and large-scale murals.

Muro’s vibrant, bold murals strike a distinctive balance between design and art. His work draws from his extensive international travels, and he takes inspiration from whatever city he is painting in. “Travelling and discovering different cultures is a gift,” he says. “I feel lucky to make my living with what I love, I don’t know what will happen in the future, I don’t have a job and a stable life, but painting and giving life to places that don’t have any is very gratifying.”

NYC Public Art- William Wegman’s Subway Murals

William Wegman‘s portraits of his Weimaraner dogs were recreated in glass mosaic form by Mayer of Munich in 2018 for “Stationary Figures”, lcated in the 23rd Street subway station. The eleven murals brighten up the walls and are one of the many projects created by MTA Arts & Design.

Photographed with the artist’s deadpan sense of humor, the dogs take on human attributes, from wearing street clothes like a shiny raincoat or flannel shirt, to being grouped like passengers as they gaze into space or peer down the platform as if waiting for the train.

Situated in bold blocks of color, the larger-than-life mosaic dogs are bursting into space and interacting with commuters. The mosaic fabricator, Mayer of Munich, interpreted the photographs taken for this project by meticulously transforming the facial expressions, skin textures and patterns of the dogs’ vibrant attire into glass mosaic. Wegman has lived and worked in the neighborhood for decades, and together with his dogs Flo and her brother Topper, they have created images that enliven this busy station.

Speaking about the project, Wegman said, “I wanted to create portraits of individual characters, people who you might see next to you on the platform. For these I dressed the dogs in more or less ordinary clothes, nothing too fashionable. I was very interested in the way in which photographs, even the out of focus dogs in the background of some images, could be translated into mosaic by Mayer of Munich, who skillfully turned gray stones into gray dogs.”

Throwback- NYC Murals- Nina Chanel Abney on the High Line

Nina Chanel Abney created NYC LOVE for the High Line in New York in November 2022 and it was on view until November of 2023.

Nina Chanel Abney creates paintings, prints, and large-scale mural installations that reflect the frenzied pace of contemporary life. In a single painting, she may merge influences from news and politics, celebrity culture and gossip blogs, social media, art history, and popular television shows, all layered together to express the overabundance of contemporary culture. Layering spray paint and acrylic paint, Abney composes scenes of everyday life with graphic, angular figures posed in narrative scenes against bright, geometric backgrounds. In one of her recent series of works, Abney sets out to realize a rural Black queer utopia, inspired by the time she spent escaping New York City during the pandemic.

For the High Line, Abney realizes NYC LOVE, a new mural that celebrates the feeling of first arriving in New York City. NYC LOVE is a whimsical take on New York City’s classic iconography. When the artist moved to New York in 2005, she would meander through the city streets from Chelsea to Times Square, seduced by the hustle and bustle, bright lights, and the idea of a sleepless city. All of the “touristy” icons that most lifetime and long-time New Yorkers take for granted were gratifying and glossy to Abney, a self-described Midwestern suburbanite. NYC LOVE is representative of Abney’s first years as a student and tourist in New York City—an ode to the feeling of newness and unfamiliarity that breeds excitement and possibility. Featuring the many icons of New York—pizza slices and the Statue of Liberty, plenty of pigeons, and one Big Apple—Abney’s mural rides the subway, floats along the waterfront, and takes in all the city has to offer. NYC LOVE graces the High Line, an icon in itself that welcomes millions of New Yorkers and visitors alike to enjoy the many offerings of the bustling metropolis.

Denver-based artist Patrick Kane McGregor created this mural for the 2021 edition of Wide Open Walls Festival in Sacramento.

Patrick “Kane” McGregor’s painting style starts with roots in graffiti and letters. In the next phase of art study he gained application, color theory and anatomy skills painting at various hand painted billboard companies over the last three decades. With the newfound knowledge of brushes and oil paints, he now explores portraiture more and found a love for it. Most his work now is based in realism, sometimes using impressionism and abstract ideas for scale or effect while exploring the use of color. Patrick enjoys painting animals, especially dogs, as they are a big part of his life. He has a deep appreciation and pride for canines in his paintings and likes to represent them majestically as they live in the moment.

Micah Crandall-Bear’s abstract landscape paintings examine Earth’s intrinsic resources and our disposition toward their accelerated transformation. His concept is infused with linear layers that cascade from atmospheric to subterranean. Landscape details hint at daily and seasonal shifts in light, evoking a sense of evolution and balance. In an ever-increasing technological world, his work reminds us to pause and admire our wild and natural surroundings. He presents abstractions that inspire a deep and effusive connection to nature.

Crandall-Bear achieves longitudinal depth by exacting precisely rendered lines and seamless expanses of color. This explicitly composed depth communicates a sense of contingency and locality. Micah’s construction of space is enhanced by his painting method. His ‘wet-on-wet’ method is a contemporary application of ‘alla prima,’ a traditional technique used mostly in oil painting, where layers of wet paint are applied to previous layers of wet paint. No matter how precise or general the area, Micah’s layered brushstrokes are decisive, but also gestural, often spanning the entire surface of the canvas from left to right. This highly active method of painting is sometimes tempered through rapid buffing and blending. The outcome is a smooth, boundless, and energetic surface.

As a Northern California native, Crandall-Bear established his artistic roots locally and continues to promote the growth of his community. His reputation brings him consistent national and international attraction from both private and public collectors. Micah’s work now adorns the walls of prominent corporations throughout the country, university hospitals, Facebook data centers in Malaysia, Sweden, and more. His work has been featured in ArtSlant, American Art Collector Magazine, Forbes, and PBS.

About the artist and his work from his website-

ILL.DES (David Fratu) is a Romanian-American abstract artist based in Denver, CO whose work is rooted in geometric shapes and technology. With a background in computer engineering, he brings elements of technology into their art, creating visually striking pieces that represent the balance between chaos and order.

His style is characterized by their use of gradients of color and intricate patterns that create a sense of depth and movement. Their compositions are filled with vibrant colors, geometric shapes, and organic line work. The use of optical illusions and visual effects in their pieces adds to the illusive nature of their work, and is influenced by the op-art movement.
