During the summer of 2016, We created and directed a video about unsatisfying situations: the frustrating, annoying, disappointing little things of everyday life, that are so painful to live or even to watch.

We quickly realized that there are a lot of other situations that would be fun to see animated, so we decided to run an animation challenge around this idea.

Radiohead- No Surprises

This song is from Radiohead’s third album, OK Computer, which was released in 1997. The video was directed by Grant Gee, who also followed the band on tour after the release of the album. The result was Meeting People is Easy, a combination music video/documentary from which the clip below is from. Thom Yorke’s struggles to hold his breath through numerous frustrating takes gives a new appreciation for the video’s visual success.

Radiohead are playing two shows in Los Angeles on 8/4 and 8/8 at The Shrine Auditorium.

David Bowie- Playing Himself on Extras

David Bowie’s work as an actor varied throughout his career, from playing a vampire with Catherine Deneuve and Susan Sarandon in The Hunger, to a goblin king in Jim Henson’s Labyrinth. But he also had a great sense of humor which can be seen in his cameo in Zoolander and this moment playing himself in Ricky Gervais’s Extras.

Art Culver City, the group exhibition currently at Mark Moore Gallery, was created in response to the current state of art fairs- which have become more about celebrity and parties than the art itself. The focus here is on the art. Standouts include Zemer Peled’s sculptures created from hand-crafted shards of porcelain (pictured above), Kim Rugg’s maps recreated using only city names and regions and Christopher Russell’s photo prints that have images scratched into them with a razor. This show closes 12/19/15.

While in Culver City make sure to stop by Maloney Fine Art to see Jeff Colson’s incredibly realistic sculpture, Stacks (pictured above), created from carved wood. This show closes 12/19.

Rosson Crow’s multimedia exhibition at Honor Fraser Gallery Madame Psychosis Holds a Séance, “explores the fictional world of Madame Psychosis, an aging showgirl obsessed with the assassination of John F. Kennedy.” The center piece is Crow’s first film, which stars Kelly Lynch as Madame Psychosis in outfits designed by Jeremy Scott.

At Anat Egbi Gallery is Jen Denike’s show ‘If She Hollers” which consists of three films and still images from them. “The show’s three protaganists feature “The Boxer”,“The Cat” and “The Pimp” interweave elements adapted from references ranging from Joe Lewis to Alice in Wonderland and RuPaul’s Drag Race”.

Diller + Scofidio- Soft Sell

Walking by a small room on the third floor of the Hammer Building at LACMA, you may hear the voice from this video calling out to you with a series of questions that all start off “hey you, wanna buy…?”. The choices range from the more abstract ideas of “a second chance” or “a piece of the American dream” to the more practical, like “a set of encyclopedias with a four color atlas”, to the more ominous options of “a judge” or “the mayor’s ear”.

The video was created by the team of Elizabeth Diller and Ricardo Scofidio working together as Diller+Scofidio. Soft Sell was originally displayed in the windows of an abandoned porno theater on 42nd Street in NYC in 1993 and is currently part of LACMA’s photo exhibition titled Lens Work: Celebrating LACMA’s Experimental Photography at 50.

Diller and Scofidio added Charles Renfro as partner in 2004 to form Diller Scofidio + Renfro,“an interdisciplinary design studio that integrates architecture, the visual arts, and the performing arts”. They have designed many high profile projects including the first mile of the High Line in NYC, the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, and the Broad Museum, soon to be opened in Los Angeles.

Today (2/22) is the last day to see Pierre Huyghe at LACMA. There is so much to see within the show and it is, at times, overwhelming. You enter the exhibition with your name announced by a live announcer and then proceed through the maze like space to find aquariums with live sea creatures in them; video work, including a film with a monkey walking around wearing the mask of a girl; sculptures including the one pictured above with a head of live bees (Untilled (Liegender Frauenakt)); and Human, a live dog who is around the gallery at various times. It’s Huyghe’s first retrospective in his twenty-five year career and well worth a trip into his unique visual world.

Today (2/22) is the last day of exhibition LOUIS VUITTON SERIES 2 – Past, Present and Future in Hollywood.

From their website:

The Series 2 exhibit is a modern and unexpected interpretation of a fashion show that contextualizes the Spring 2015 Women’s Ready-to-Wear collection, conceived by Women’s Artistic Director, Nicolas Ghesquière. The exhibit allows visitors to explore the creative process behind the collection through a “series” of distinctive rooms that thematically share his influences and inspirations as well as the excitement of the fashion show experience.

It is an interesting exhibit and does immerse you in the fashion show world. There is even a video section where you learn about the process of creating the items themselves. And free stickers at the end!

Today is the last day to see British artist Gillian Wearing’s exhibition everyone at Regen Projects. The two new video works are especially affecting.

Fear and Loathing, the artist’s first work produced in the US, presents a split screen with two people wearing masks, one on each side, alternating monologues about either a fear or a loathing from their personal lives. In the second, We are Here, residents of the West Midlands of England, tell stories of their lives as if they have returned from the dead. This piece was inspired by the American poet Edgar Lee Masters’ 1915 book Spoon River Anthology.

The artist also includes portraits of herself within the exhibition, including a portrait of herself in a mask of her younger self, a large necklace with a pendant that is a mask of her face, and a series of sculptures of her hand with different fortune teller readings written on them.

There’s a certain sadness to the exhibition as Wearing examines lives caught in circumstances that are often beyond their control. This ties in to the idea of the fortune teller, who is sought out for the feeling that life is predestined. Yet the various fortune tellers here tell different stories for the same hand. Perhaps these are like the different stories we are presenting to the world throughout our lives, at times with our true faces masked.

Chris Engman: Ink on Paper

Luis de Jesus gallery is currently showing Chris Engman’s incredible photographs which play with the notion of what is real. Although the images sometimes appear three dimensional (like the cube and paper above) or altered in some way, they are more straight forward than they seem. These optical illusions should be seen in person to get the full effect.

Also take a moment to see Antonia Wright’s video work in the back of the gallery. Watching her fall through a sheet of glass naked repeatedly is mesmerizing and disturbing.

Both shows close 5/10.

Liquid Crystal Palace: Recent Works with Jeremy Blake

Inspired by Jeremy Blake’s Liquid Villa, the curators Rhizome Editor, Michael Connor and Nate Hitchcock, present colorful artworks including paintings, video and sculpture created by more recent artists that share a similar sensibility. Rafaël Rozendaal’s lenticular paintings and installation (pictured above) are particularly captivating.

Jeremy Blake’s work may look familiar to those who have seen the opening credits to the film Punch Drunk Love or the cover of Beck’s album, Sea Change. He sadly gained notoriety in 2007 when he committed suicide not long after his girlfriend, artist Theresa Duncan.

This show closes 4/5/14.
