Bill Baird is playing a free show at Highland Park Bowl with Manhattan Murder Mystery and Mirrorball

ICA LA is hosting Reading the News-a 34,000 Pillows workshop with artist collaborative Díaz Lewis. 34,000 is the quota of detained immigrants per day in 250 facilities around the country mandated by the US Congress and enforced by ICE. Pillows from recycled clothing will be created and added to the 34,000 Pillows project to be sold for $159 (an amount that reflects the average amount of taxpayer money spent each day by Congress to detain one person daily) with 100% of proceeds donated to national and local immigration organizations. While the pillows are made there will also be a reading of news, literature, and poetry. (free)

Union Station is hosting Magic & Mystery, a free night of performances by magicians on the South Patio

Independent Shakespeare Co. is having free performances of the play Twelfth Night in Griffith Park all weekend and tonight as part of their Salon Series, Invertigo Dance Theatre Artistic Director Laura Karlin will lead an exploration into creating story through choreography.

Annie Leibovitz. The Early Years, 1970 – 1983: Archive Project No. 1 at Hauser and Wirth Los Angeles, is an engrossing look into the beginnings of a photographer who is now one of the most famous in the world. The exhibition, curated by Leibovitz herself, features more than 4,000 photographs. Despite that large number, the layout keeps it from feeling overwhelming. Photographs are put together on the walls by theme and time period. As you wander from room to room looking at the often recognizable faces, Leibovitz’s distinct style emerges.

The early sections of the show give the viewer a chance to see Annie Leibovitz as a young artist just starting out and developing her way of looking at the world through a camera. On one wall is a collage of photos creating a panorama of the Pont Neuf bridge in Paris. She took it when she realized she was standing where Henri Cartier-Bresson, one of the photographers she most admired, had once stood to photograph that same bridge. The sense of excitement she felt at that moment informs the image she would later take of Cartier-Bresson himself. That portrait is included on another wall with images of other photographers and artists she admired.

Walking from room to room, the famous faces blend together with the history of the time period. Political protests, music festivals and tours, presidential campaigns, Nixon’s resignation, Warhol’s factory- she was there documenting what was happening, often in unique ways. Her ability to observe and capture moments without intruding in her subject’s personal space remains present whether it is a rock star, politician, or a member of her own family.

As the show moves through Leibovitz’s timeline, her increased focus on the portraiture that would make her famous emerges. Her staged photographs from the 1980s of celebrities including Keith Haring, Whoopi Goldberg, and Meryl Streep appear. The transition makes logistical sense as this progression of her career is made clear by all the work that came before. Her portraits are the works that stand out the most, even at the beginning.

The exhibition captures an incredible period of time in both the artist’s work and the history of America. Make sure to leave a lot of time to see it before it closes on 4/14/19.

Piero Manzoni. Materials of His Time is the first exhibition with the gallery and the first in Los Angeles in over 20 years devoted to the seminal figure of postwar Italian Art and progenitor of Conceptualism. Curated by Rosalia Pasqualino di Marineo, director of the Piero Manzoni Foundation in Milan, this exhibition focuses on Manzoni’s revolutionary approach to unconventional materials through the exploration of what he dubbed ‘Achromes’ – paintings without color. Over 70 ‘Achromes’ will be on view, comprised of such materials as sewn cloth, cotton balls, fiberglass, synthetic and natural fur, straw, cobalt chloride, polystyrene, stones, and more. The exhibition situates Manzoni as a peer of such artists as Lucio Fontana and Yves Klein, whose experiments continue to influence contemporary art-making today. ‘Materials of His Time’ will also present, for the first time, the items on a wish list Manzoni outlined in a 1961 letter to his friend Henk Peeters: a room all in white fur, and another coated in fluorescent paint, totally immersing the visitor in white light.

The “Achromes” are simple but pleasing in their graphic simplicity. Lacking in color, they stand out against the soothing muted colors of the walls.

Heading upstairs, there’s something so delightful about stepping into the white fur room that fulfills Manzoni’s dream. The room itself has a white felt floor and fake fur lines the walls, ceiling and door. It may not be as thrilling now that installation art is more common in museums and galleries, but after reading the artist’s quote, knowing he got his wish makes it much more special. The artist died in 1963 at the young age of 29, too soon to see how much would change in the art world. Also, after seeing an exhibition that focuses on objects with so many different textures, having a chance to touch the furry walls is oddly satisfying.

This exhibition closes 4/7/19.

Jenny O. is playing at the Bootleg Theater wit RF Shannon and Ferdy Mayne opening

Moaning are playing at Zebulon with David Scott Stone, Automatic, and French Vanilla

 

Friday and Saturday

In celebration of Black History Month, Hauser & Wirth is hosting Personal Problems, a free film series organized by LA-based artist Charles Gaines. Friday they are showing Black Girl, by Ousamane Sembène, and Until, Until, Until by Edgar Arceneaux. The screenings will be followed by a brief Q& A with Charles Gaines and Edgar Arceneaux. On Saturday at 2pm they are showing Personal Problems, directed by Bill Gunn, and at 7:30pm three short films will be screened along with the full length film Outside the Law, directed by Rachid Bouchareb.

The 5th Annual Bob Baker Day is taking place in Los Angeles State Historic Park and will have puppet shows, DJ sets, workshops, carnival games and more, all free

Hauser & Wirth is hosting the world premiere of CSSC – It Begins – The Coach The Skull and the US premiere of DADDA – Poodle House Saloon, two new films by Los Angeles artist Paul McCarthy, at The Montalbán Theater in Hollywood (free)

LACMA will be running artist Martha Fiennes moving-image artwork Yugen free all day in the Bing Theater with a discussion at 6pm with the artist and actor Julian Sands

Art Buzz returns to ICA LA with a happy hour tour of Maryam Jafri’s I Drank the Kool-Aid But I Didn’t Inhale led by curator Jamillah James and Director of Learning and Engagement Asuka Hisa, followed by refreshments (free)

Miya Folick is playing at the Lodge Room with Barrie and Kingsbury opening

The 6th Annual Dre Day Los Angeles is taking place at the Echoplex with special guests Battlecat and DJ Melo-D of The Beat Junkies and an evening of Dre-related music

Marc Almond of Soft Cell will be performing a “best of ” set at the Globe Theatre along with a DJ set by Hercules & Love Affair, a performance by The Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black and more for Sex Cells 2 year anniversary

It will be followed by conversations between MOCA Director Klaus Biesenbach, Hans Ulrich Obrist and artists Lauren Halsey, Korakrit Arunanondchai, and Luchita Hurtado plus free admission to their current exhibitions

At Hammer Museum, artists Kandis Williams and Devin Troy Strother join gallery director Ebony L. Haynes for a discussion about “the contemporary tensions of presenting the black body as it relates to sexuality, politics, and history” (free)

Writer Doreen St. Felix will be speaking with Amandla Stenberg at The Underground Museum and it’s the last weekend to see Deana Lawson: Planes

The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA is hosting a free panel discussion on Zoe Leonard’s fictional work The Fae Richard Photo Archive. The history, form and content of the work as well as its current relevance will be discussed by a panel that includes filmmaker Garrett Bradley, noted art historian Huey Copeland, and MOCA Associate Curator Lanka Tattersall with former MOCA Assistant Curator Rebecca Matalon moderating. The work is part of the current exhibition Zoe Leonard:Survey and can be seen at the museum as part of their free weekend admission.

LACMA is hosting a discussion of the legacy of artist Charles White in conjunction with the exhibition Charles White: A Retrospective, with Ilene Susan Fort, the museum’s curator emeritus of American art and curator of the Los Angeles venue of the exhibition; Ian White, son of Charles White, an artist in his own right and archivist of his father’s work; Judithe Hernández, renown contemporary artist and one of Charles White’s students; Kellie Jones, Associate Professor of Art History and Archaeology in African American Studies at Columbia University; and Peter Clothier, noted writer and art critic. (free but tickets required)

At ICA LA, photographer Lucas Blalock and ICA Curator Jamillah James will be discussing his work in conjunction with his solo exhibition at the museum

Mikey Carnevale of The Frights is playing at The Roxy with The Grinns

Art Fairs running all weekend

Art Los Angeles Contemporary is at the Barkar Hangar ($29 + fees) and there will be a free shuttle to the stARTup Art Fair ($15 + fees online) at The Kinney Hotel if you want to do both in the same day

Frieze Los Angeles is taking place at Paramount Pictures Studios but there are currently only tickets available for the Curated Program which includes the outdoor Studios backlot, artist projects, film and talks but not the indoors gallery section ($20 and only available on Sunday as of this writing)

At The Stalls at Skylight ROW DTLA is the inaugural SPRING/BREAK Art Show ($20 + fees)

Superfine! Art Fair is taking place at DTLA’s Magic Box at The Reef with 90% of the artwork ranging from $100- $5000 ($10 entrance fee if purchased online)

Felix LA is a new free contemporary art fair taking place at The Hollywood Roosevelt
